Steering rack gater problem

I am replacing the gater on the near side, steering rack pas there is a white plastic ring that is not secured on the part that slides in and out. After fitting the gater it does not concertener it just distorts. Anyone else had this problem.

I found the same with gaiters that I fitted recently.

I'm sure I've seen some with small holes as part of the gaiter moulding in the past, but this new set doesn't have them. I solved the problem by carefully drilling a small hole, positioned where any dirt is least likely to enter.
