I noticed what looks like gearbox oil splashed over my transmission tunnel directly inline with where prop goes into box.
I’m aware if you remove prop and tip gearbox back oil will come out which is why I emptied I before removing engine and box in one.
This oil/ crud looked dry and old and looks to have built up over 20 years rather than I have a problem but is this a sign a rear gearbox seal is on its way out or rather just that the prop is a push fit into box and this is the inevitable consequence of 75,000 miles use over 21 years and I only noticed this slight oil splashing by chance as body is off.
Just wondering really.
I really like my gearbox so any advice will be stored until or if it becomes an issue.
Thanks

Hi Alun

You could put a new output shaft seal in it fairly easily:

Alun, are you sure it’s not grease splatter from the UJ on the prop? I’ve found when the UJ is greased, excess is flung off by centrifugal force and creates a line of dirty greasy deposit in line with the UJ

Haha nail on the head.
Yes it’s not oil mixed with road muck it’s grease.
I’ve had the UJ’s greased in my ownership at least twice. thumbup

Thanks Eddy. I think it’s just grease but that’s useful
Information. Cheers Alun.
