Afternoon. Engine out and was refitting the flywheel after having it lightened and noticed small but distinct in/out movement.
I was surprised and concerned to feel this. The engine is a serp 4.0 with under 40k miles. The car ran perfectly before taking it off the road to do a chassis refurb and no noise, rumbling etc. No other engine work undertaken.
I assume you should not be able to feel any discernable movement when holding the flywheel and try and move it backwards/forward?
I was hoping to just drop the engine back in without dropping the sump and checking mains. This is getting out of my comfort zone. Ta for any advice

Measure it and get back ,do not expect zero float

Depending on the amount of movement you have it would be worse if you had none.

There is supposed to be some float. I don't have this vehicle but on the resources that exist you will be able to find the tolerances. Then I suggest you utube some methods of measuring it. It's quite simple to do so, and it will be a good excuse to buy a measuring tool of some sort.

I had a Rover V8 with noticeable end float and it was way out of tolerance. It did entail sump off and some bearings, actually only one that controlled end float. It was fairly straightforward.

You may find your in tolerance it's more than you would think.

Ive no experience of this engine but a quick google suggest end float should be between 4 and 8 thousandths. You wouldn’t be able to see that simply by moving the flywheel axially so it needs to be checked properly

C.S end float should be 0.003 - 0.010" I'm old school so you can have it in imperial smile

Crank End Float

0.08 to 0.26 mm

0.003 to 0.010 in
