I want to fit reversing beepers to our Chimaera but with all the curves it is not obvious where to place the sensors.

I think the best place is just below the mock bumper bulge, but before I start drilling I thought I would ask if anyone has any experience of where to put them, or where to avoid.

(I would add a picture but I can't see how to do that).

Thanks.

David

You might need to start with what the sensor requires.
In my mind's eye, they tend to be a bit more vertical, so they're looking behind you, and that area of the car might be looking down too much for it to be effective. It might also be too low to pick up the presence of something like an SUV.
Your best method might be to find a crude way to fit them (I'm thinking a bundle of masking tape and some bits of cardboard) to see what they want.

I wouldn't be surprised if you need to modify something to hold them in a useful way, or create a moulded form to bond to the car down there.

Have you considered a digital rear view mirror and reversing camera.

I have the camera hidden behind the reg plate with a small hole drilled in it

Mirror is just a normal mirror until I pop it in reverse and then it puts a set of parking lines and a really good view of the back of the car. The mirror also has a front facing camera and records both of them

Check out Wolfbox for more details.

I hadn't seen those Bowks - they look good. Did you make a clear circle in your number plate or drill a hole?

That's a far simpler idea - especially for those of us with the back illuminated numberplate - you could possibly hide it behind a letter/number even?
And probably quite easy to fit a grommet for a seal into the boot.

I have it in one of the letters. I'll take a photo when I'm next out.

Bowks, I am not clear how the rear view mirror works. Does the Wolf unit cover it completely and have its own mirror? If so does that mirror have a dip function? The web site doesn't explain very well, being too full of electronic facts! I assume a concealed power wire is also needed around the windscreen. David

The whole mirror unit is swapped out.

It takes power, the feed from the rear camera and can have a GPS unit to overlay orientation. I'll try and take some photos.

When the mirror is switched off it is just a mirror. When you go into reverse it turns on the digital rear view.

Thinking of going a similar route. Handy thing with those with a recessed number plate boxes is it gives you a location for the camera. Issue with the Tam is that the number plate is over the exhaust. Definately a worth while mod for a Sag as the spoiler renders the rear view mirror useless. Wolfbox - I believe - can also continuously 'broadcast' so you can use it as a rear view mirror. Camera can be mounted on ceiling to give an unobstructed view ourwards.

That's a very neat installation in the numberplate. Also I had not seen the radio based one that just fits inside. Lots of info and options, so I am glad I didn't just start drilling ! Thanks Everyone. I will let you know what we decide.

Are all the WOLFBOX mirrors 12" .... Seems very big in the window screen ? Be OK in big SUV ... but I would want something smaller in a TVR ... But I like the idea of combining rear view mirror, dashcam and reversing camera in one unit.

I think an earlier model was 10 inch (same as TVR) and there are some s/h on ebay in that size. I agree 12 seems very big and my wife is not keen at the moment on too much tech (and its her car!)

Yep .. you're correct my TVRs are both 10" .. so maybe 2" more will be OK ... I may well get one smile

I remember when I had a Ford Escort I phoned the local Ford dealer and asked if it would be possible to retrofit a reversing beeper, and he said "No, what you have to do is wind down your window and shout 'Caution, this vehicle is reversing' "

I picked up one of these recently @ £23.50 I wasn't expecting much but it works great as an android auto gizmo and it also does Car play. I haven't setup the reverse camera but I may do in the Chimaera. They're currently £33 plus vat but I'd still say they're worth it. I had issues with it disconnecting from my phone at 1st but since changing phones it's very reliable. I also bought an extended windscreen mount so that I can have it on the dash of the TVR which I've yet to use.

Here it is in my daily which has the el cheapo screen without satnav.
