I have a very small but persistent leak from one of the unions on my remote oil filter. (Not quite) the last resort is to use PTFE. Has anyone done this successfully or does anyone warn against it?

If it is the taper seat leaking I'd advice against PTFE, any that gets chewed up as you tighten the fitting will end up in your oilways, not good if it's downside of the filter.

Firstly I'd clean the two mating surfaces and check for even the slightest damage to either. If all good assemble with a smear of thread Lock'n Seal

It's downstream of the filter.

I use thread locker anyway, and can't see any damage to the threads.

Bah!

Thank you :l

Do you have fittings like these? Could be a thread leaking, perhaps where the top fitting screws into the filter housing, or I was suggesting possibly the mating faces as arrowed? Not trying to teach anyone "how to suck eggs" but the thread doesn't make the seal on this type of connection.

No, it doesn't, but the oil still has to leak past the threads to drip onto the chassis rail. Yes, it's those fittings, and they are pristine, as far as I can tell. It's a bit of a pain in the arse, and I'm geting sick if chasing the drip. I don't want to replace all the joints, hence the PTFE plan.

If you've got the standard mocal sandwich plate type (as i have) are you sure the leak is from the fitting and not the filter head, I don't mean to be patronising but I had the same sounding problem but after resorting to slightly re-tightening the centre filter mounting bolt the leak vanished.

I thought I was sure. When you get under the car, it seems pretty clear where the drip is, but I'll be swapping the filter tomorrow anyway, so I'll have a closer look.

Not really...

From beneath

From above. This is the return side, and this is where it's leaking

I'm coming back to this one. The oil pipe is connected to the filter housing with a 22mm/20mm reducer. This is what's leaking.

If I can, I may as well replace it, but I don't know where to find one. Any ideas?
