I went to replace a bulb and discovered its not the bulb it is a burnt out H4 plug recepticle. Looks like the frayed wire or heat from the bulb heated up the plastic and housing to the point of failure.

I will get a replacement socket and wire it up. The other headlight and all other bulbs work fine, so I assume there are not fuses specific to each side of the car.

Any reason to be otherwise concerned? The bulbs are standard low wattage H4 bulbs. Maybe just the plug was old and dirty

It is a known weakness I believe.

Its even more worrying when you consider that 100w bulbs were fitted as standard to some cars.

Its the reason I switched back to latest technology 55W (just as good and whiter so looks more modern)

There you have it. Normally dirty contacts which cause a resistance. the resistance then creates the heat and melts the plug.
