Stepper Motor Heads up
Discussion
I noticed a while back that the threads on my stepper motor shaft had been stripped meaning that when it was either asked to lengthen or shorten ir would just spin in the same place. After reading this post https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=13... I bought a cheap ebay part and cut the spindle down. It worked with some sucess until it jammed. I decided to go for an original one until I saw this on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FOR-TVR-GRIFFITH-4-0-PET... The picture seemed to show that it had a shaft and cone the same as the original. Took a punt on it and although the shaft still needed shortening it fitted perfectly into the original stepper motor and the car warms up and idles exactly as it should.
I recently fitted the same Ebay one, despite reading all the warnings. No problems at all. Tickover is now a nice steady 900rpm, ( it was always about 1100 before ) and when slowing to a stop, the revs drop down to tickover really quickly. Time will tell if it lasts ,but at that price, I don't mind buying another one .
Am I understanding that you have taken the shaft out of the new stepper and fitted it to the old stepper?
If so then why that rather than just using the whole new stepper.
If you are using the whole new unit then what is different between this one and the 'Chinese' version you tried before?

Yes, old stepper motor using shaft from new one. The motor in the previous copy part jammed after a year. Couldn't be bothered to arse about with the new copy part (which i got for £8) when i realised I could use its shaft in the original lucas stepper. Who knows the whole unit it might have worked perfectly but I didnt care to find out.
The second copy part has a shaft identical in shape and profile to the original, but slighty longer. The first copy part 's shaft has a differwnt profile and is not interchangeable. Thr first copy part is painted black, but the second one is polished metal. There are clearly two different copies out there.

I bought a £12 version in 2014. It was awful.
Engine revs would hang at 3000 rpm at junctions for a few seconds when cold. When warm, the car would sputter and stall. I convinced myself it was something else at first, but in the end I bit the bullet and bought an £80 genuine item from Recetech. Been fine ever since. Some people have got lucky with the cheap ones but I didn't.
