I have a '93 Chim fitted with the original Bilsteins and springs. The car has done very low miles (<19k) and the springs and shocks look good and work well but the bump stops have started to perish. The car is very original and I would like to keep it that way, so I want to fit new bump stops to the original shocks.

Anyone know what will fit or if I can buy Bilstein replacements? I had a look at Powerflex universal bump stops and their BS007 may be OK but it's not exactly as the original.

Thanks

Joolz of Kits and Classics fame uses his own sourced bump stops on Protech shocks so if nothing else turns up contact him as I'm sure he could help/ assist.

Contacted the technical centre (thanks for the details). They told me the Bilstein part no is E4-B46-759 for both front and back. I have emailed bilstein-shocks.co.uk for a quote.

are the very early shocks serviceable? i ask because the shocks on my car [95 500] aren't or at least weren't until i dismantled them and fitted schrader valves so they can be re-gassed with nitrogen. during the rebuild i have renewed the bump stops but was only able to do so after removing the damper piston which has a staked nut that required de buring with a dremel tool before undoing the nut i then carefully chased the threads in the lathe and fitted new nuts [something like m9x.8] with lock tight on reassembly so quite an involved job. the 20 year old oil had a horrible burnt smell so good to be able to replace it. not sure if the top eye is removable? if it is you might be able to go in that way?

The top eye of my ones looks like it could be removable but I haven't actually done it yet!
There is a rolled pin through the eye collar which I am assuming is locking it to a thread on top of the rod. The one I removed to look at is back on the car now while I wait for the new stops to arrive. I will let you know how I get on when I try to fit them.

this is good to know. how did you hold the shaft without damaging it when you removed the top? and how tight are they? I made a split bush to hold mine in the lathe while i was working on the other end.

I cut off the old stops so that I could grip the rod lengthwise in a vice with soft jaws of plywood. A couple were quite tight but came free with some penetrating oil and a bar through the eye.

crikey I remember drilling so many of those dampers back in the dealer days, the top eyes used to fret and several snapped. there was a bulletin that all dampers had to be rollpinned i think after a while.

They certainly looked like the roll pins were put in after the whole spring damper unit was assembled, everyone of them lined up perfectly with the slot in the spring retainer. You may have drilled these! The dealer who supplied and serviced the car in its early years was Henley Heritage.
