My project rebuild is fully under way now, so many more questions to come...

As title says exhaust wrap, I am looking to wrap my manifolds, can you recommend a good wrap to use?

Thanks

Sorry to hijack your thread, but was wondering if wrapping the manifolds is enough to stop damaging coating on chassis and melting poly bushes?

It's common these days to wrap the upper chassis rail with aluminium coated waterproof wrap. Make sure the coating is fully sealed first then wrap along the area exposed to manifold heat. Poly bushes are best protected by metal reflectors.

Oh and yes, wrapping the manifolds will reduce heat damage to the chassis & bushes

As Bob says. I've wrapped the manifolds with exhaust wrap from Demon Tweaks - don't know how good it is but its still there after 2 years - and when I fitted poly bushes, a sheet of wrap was included to fit over the top front rear bush to help keep the heat off. That sheet is already showing signs of deterioration after just 10 months.

These are the ones I made for mine.

They cover most of the length of the top tube and are held in place by the Velcro along the edges. The ear with the cable tie goes over the suspension bush and ties around the wishbone. The ear is sewn on and gives double thickness insulation right at the bush.

I agree with Bobfather that a making a metal shield would be better. The cheap stuff in the kit has already lost its 'silver' coating despite exhaust wrap on the manifolds too.
Under the bonnet and directly above the turbo I fitted a sheet of this stuff on top of the protection that TVR fitted just to protect the paintwork from any excess heat damage. Its not cheap but its peace of mind for me. It might work to protect the bushes but a metal shield I think would be better.

Now then Mr Polisher, a good question. I fitted the wrap with the manifolds in place. I like to challenge myself. Because the clearance of the manifolds from the chassis rails is very tight I had to feed the end of the wrap along the rail each time I wrapped it around. It took ages.
I used 1" around the tubes but with them in place it was impossible to get a complete covering. Then I used the 2" wide from the Y piece back towards the individual tubes.
I ordered 2 x 2" 25 foot rolls and 2 x 1" 25 foot rolls. I used all the 2" but only one of the 1". It depends on how much overlap you want. I did not need the second 1" but if the manifolds were off then I think you could wrap them much neater and tighter so you would probably need the second roll.

You can buy this stuff on eBay for probably a lot less?

This is after fitting the 1". You can see the difficulty fitting it in situ.

This is before fitting the 2" which is too wide to fit cleanly around the tubes.

Don't forget you will need stainless tie wraps to hold it in place and around the fat part of the manifold I had to join 2 together.

It's my father's man cave, only got one CAT out today after much swearing, drilling, hammering... then some of the beers was well deserved. Task tomorrow is to do other one... plus maybe rewarded with few beers after. Wrap now ordered and next task on list of many jobs to do...

When you have taken the other pre-cat out, could I suggest you fill each manifold with water and check for leaks around the welds where the four pipes merge into large bore section of the manifold. Did this on mine and found both were leaking. Far simpler to weld repair from the inside with the pre-cats out. yes

If you insulate any part of the exhaust where does that heat go ?

By all accounts the increased heat in the gases cause them to travel faster which in turn helps clear gases from the cylinder and improve cylinder fill.

I bought a spare set of manifolds and the Y pipes to do this. I'm thinking of getting some of the DIY ceramic VHT paint to paint them. Anyone done this themselves? if so which product did you use? I'll then be wrapping in this much cheaper than the stuff sold at DT came with the stainless clips too. Looks like I could do with some of the 1" stuff too.
