Are you sure it's the ratchet that has failed?

On mine the M8 bolt that secures the mechanism to the chassis had sheared off - resulting in a floppy lever.

It's easy to access from above, via an access panel.

What year is yours?, mine is a 93. I had the centre console top off at the weekend but did not see an access panel.

Been a few days I know, I forgot to check the thread, leaving it in gear seems more effective than a working handbrake (joke before you all start)

Still got the access panel off mine from replacing the warning switch. You have to unship the door opener and lower panel that hols the side bolsters first. You'll need to be able to get the gear-knob off. Under there is a long panel probably covered in sealant that holds the rubber gaiters for the gear stick and the handbrake. Mine had 9 screws.

Just took quick photo. Apologies for the blur:

At the front of the handbrake (shown on the left in that link) is a nut and bolt that I found controls the use of the button and the ratchet. If it's too tight, the button won't press in. Too loose and the ratchet doesn't work. I undid it by accident but set it up again OK.

Thanks, the pic is fine, looks way different to mine as I remember it. Got to take it apart at the weekend anyway, L/H door cable needs replacing

It's from a 1996 model if that makes a difference.

Funny thing is, I put it away one night, it was fine, next day, no hand brake, not like I felt something let go
