The nadgers Rich wink used this on numerous other parts too (un primed) but most engine enamels are a durable long lasting finish http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-accessories/...

Sump painting? Not like it's going to rust with the amount of oil it will be seeing on both surfaces... hehe

Hi Simon, would you recommend using a rubber gasket?, as mine needs a refresh.

Heard not so good things about those after-market rubber gaskets TBH I stick with cork but branded ones (better cork) with just a smear of Hylomar no problems in 10 years + wink in saying this you can get an even more reliable seal using a proper sump sealer (no gasket material) Dirko , Reinzosil etc application method is critical however scratchchin

It's funny how these things go but, my experience, give Dirko the widest berth possible... (regardless of paint and full marks to those who can be arsed).

Definitely do not use the 'rubber' ones that are out there; unless something has changed, they are made from EDPM, which is not oil resistant and certainly not hot oil resistant. Mine went hard and crumbled in very short time - junk, and expensive junk at that.

Have tried the nitrile foam thing a couple of times and although initially promising, that broke down too. Pains me to say it as it's soooo old skool but dense cork with Welseal is the most effective (degrease and thread seal the fasteners and use little o rings under the washers too).

Will still seep smile

Hello Gary & Simon,

Thanks for your input, l have see comments on FB that Specialists using a combination of cork and Reinzosil , so l may give this a try, and as you say the correct application is critical.

Fiat are experts at making sumps that rust from both inside and outside at the same time, i.e. Fiat Punto is the best at this rolleyes

But, Fiat, IMO, make the best sump sealant of all. Since I last fitted the sump with a nice thin line of the black goo there is till no sign of a leak wink

.............but

I now have a small leak from the sump plug and have tried genuine and various other types of washers (bonded, copper crushable, aloominum) curse Thinking the weld may be cracked.....

My son's Punto needed a new sump, but I suspect that was more to do with stone chips at the front really....

Why don't they make them of Rubber or heavy grade plastic?

Hi,most sealants work fine but the best thing I did was to get rid of the bolts and fit studs with nuts and washers.Stops the sump sliding all over the place when trying to refit.

I did mine at the start of the year just using some high temp rtv sealant as expertly demonstrated here by Xworks.

Coming to the end of the summer and the garage floor is still drip free.

Best i`ve done to date.

Not used it on my RV8 Rich (still on cork) but Carsy's pics are spot on a 5mm bead approx scratchchin on grease/oil free surfaces
