So this morning I drive through town to get some oil for the car. Driving along the road on the industrial estate and slowing down for the unit I want, speed 23 mph on the dashcam, a black Skoda suddenly emerges from behind a hedge on my left and turns right. No problem except that it drives towards me on my side of the road. I hit the brakes but the other driver doesn't and we collide. His offside front corner hits me head on at a fairly low impact speed.
We come to a stop, then the Skoda reverses back, comes alongside and suggests parking up to exchange details. He is slim, tall, short black hair and stubble. Then he drives off. His number plates are covered with RAC plates so unable to get the registration number. I stand there bloody angry when a technician from another garage across the road (German specialist) comes over and asks whats happened. I tell him and he says the car broker business is where the Skoda was parked. I'll tell the owner and he'll sort it for you.
5 mins later the owner comes out of the unit and tells me he will get the driver to return. A heated phone call and after some 30 minutes a blue BMW turns up with a short fat, baldy wearing a baseball cap. An angry row erupts between the broker and this man. He comes over to my car and says he was in a hurry and had to leave. I ask for his name and address - he refuses. I ask for the registration number of the Skoda - he gives me the blue BMW one. I am so close to punching this bloke I am restrained by my partner and the broker. He gives his details, name, address, tel no, insurance company and repeats the BMW registration number.
Another heated row but now he maintains he was driving the BMW at the time of the collision. What? The broker tells him it was definitely the Skoda as it had been for sale on his forecourt. Eventually he says it was the Skoda but still gives the wrong number. It may have been a mistake as the Skoda number is only one letter different from the BMW. Coincidence?
He says he has a body shop and can fix my car. Er, no thanks.....I have in the meantime contacted the police who struggle to work it all out. They will not be attending, no surprise there. But I have to go to a police station with my docs blah, blah, blah. I get home as the damage is very light really and check the registration number on DVLA. It, of course, comes back as a BMW. Check with M.I.D. and it is insured.
Partner now phones the short fat baldy guy and asks for the Skoda number. Once again he insists he was driving the BMW - yawn, yawn - so I tell him I'm now on my way to the cop shop to report him. This does the trick and he gives the Skoda number then hangs up. Good news, he is insured. But was the driver?
The short baldy chap has a body shop. He was selling a black Skoda through the broker at an agreed price. However, he managed to sell it himself so came to the unit with a 'mate', a second key and dropped him off nearby. The 'mate' simply walked into the unit doorway and drove the car away at speed so he didn't have to pay the broker's fees. That's when he hit me. Later there was a huge shouting match between baldy and the broker but the fees remain unpaid.
Insurance all informed but there may be a problem. Despite the dash-cam footage, unless he admits liability, I will probably lose my excess, all £760.

I've been in touch with Surface and Design for the repairs. Waiting for the accident claims management company to call me in the morning. Not one of my best days.

But the good news is that my improved bonnet hinge repair from last week was not damaged.

Send the details of the car and the footage to your insurance company. If he wishes to claim he was driving then his insurance will pay out.
Police won't do anything. They did nothing on my incidents.
Once money is confirmed your way then name and shame the guy on social media.
You and yours weren't hurt. That is great news. The car can be fixed.

Sent the footage off so waiting for the accident management lot to call me tomorrow. My insurance agree that if he wants to say he was driving, it will be easier all round to settle.
Got to do a quick bodge paint job on it as we are off to Scotland on Monday to get married. Timing not great

I'll start with the good news...
Congratulations and hope it doesn't interfere with your wedding plans in anyway.
What a nightmare story, any damage is horrible and a bad thing but for some reason I was expecting to see it come off a lot worse.
I've tried to avoid having a dash cam till now but I think these days with so many scum about it's about time I got one.
Feeling your pain and anger but try if you can to put it all behind you so that it doesn't spoil the wedding.

Definitely get a dash-cam, have in all our cars and been worth it. I do live in one of the worst areas for cash-for-crash scams. The impact was very slow but the bonnet did flex up quite a lot causing crazing to the paint.
Just before
Impact
So, you are offering me the use of your nice shiny new T350 then

Why do I find it odd even when there is obvious criminal intent and acts the Police simply do not want to know and just say let teh insurance cover it and sort it. Yet the Police are happy to take up really stupid cases if it suits their personal or politcial agenda!
I feel for you I really do.

Sorry you're out of luck on timing for the T350 as I don't pick it up till sometime next week, guess it would of been a nice wedding present though.

Depending on your insurer, and I know this may sound bizarre, you may be better off being hit by an uninsured driver. The company will not count it as a claim against you and you won't lose NCB.
No matter who is deemed as 'at fault' or who pays, you'll have to declare it as an accident in the future anyway.

Is that section public highway or private ? If the former why aren't the police interested in an obscured reg plate ?
Its a public highway - street lights, signs etc. The police traffic officer phoned me this afternoon. His first comment was, 'where did this happen?' Once I told him the address he said, 'That's not my area, this is not my job.' So, I sort of guessed where this was going.

It seems that now I am talking to the insurance company then that's that. End of. They wont be able to track down the driver blah blah, a euphemism for 'can't be arsed.'

You may have seen how wonderful and efficient West Yorkshire Police are on "Traffic Cops" (Channel 5) in the current series. The reality is that without a TV camera 2 feet away, this lot show zero interest in most crime and offences.

I was at the gym yesterday watching some daytime tv trash on subtitles with that annoying little bald fella (Dom something or other ?). They were with traffic police who were shown cruising for any trivial s

t. They trail a guy with a trailer (some kind of portable tank), after initially clocking him not wearing seatbelt. Next offence, not matching reg plate on trailer, then speeding (39 in a 30), finally stop him to see breakaway cable not connected on tow bar (dangerous driving). Couldn't produce a driving licence to see if he had the rating for towing (youngish guy so probably not automatically entitled like us oldies). Total possible penalties several thousand pounds, points etc. Copper let him off with just the seatbelt offence and £100 fine as he was already on 8 points and needed a warning .Cuddly Dom then interviewed him afterwards and he was cocky as f

I feel your pain.
Good luck with the wedding btw, don't let it spoil the occasion

.. Don't worry about it as you've got more things on your mind at the moment,I'll do some research of my own. Still looks good for that old though.
