Any idea what was fitted originaly to the cars?

Mine as most I've seen had Pioneer speakers fitted. Mine had especially battered grills so I found some modern replacements. I can't recall the make at the mo but they're much higher output to the original and with a newer head unit you can actually hear them over the car at motorway crusing speeds.
Mine were Pioneer. The grilles were very battered. I managed to get some identical new old stock off eBay for not very much money. If you want to stay original keep scanning eBay something will turn up. However I must say the whole original Pioneer setup is pretty crappy and I think there's a strong arguement to install a modern system with Bluetooth and hands free.

Just found the link to the pair I bought JL Audio c2 600x. I didn't like the look of the grills originally but they've grown on me. I'm still in 2 minds as to if I should spray the silver rings black or not. They're one of the few modern speakers with decent output that I could find in the right size as most where too large when I looked at the dimensions.edit to fix auto correct errors from my phone.

they dont get used unless I am in traffic so pretty much never
