Clive F Decat Pipe & MoT
Discussion
Gone down the route of ordering one of Clive's Y pipes for the Chimaera and been reading lots of information regarding what happens at MoT time.
One interesting point written on here years ago that if it's registered before August 1995, it's tested as a pre-cat car. Mine is December 1994.
Is this the case?
Will I still need to change them back come MoT time, purely for emmissions?
Also talk of TVR' friendly' garages not bothering too much at the emmissions, all of this seems in the distant past as far as forum posts go, so what are people with de-catted cars come MoT time in 2017?
Cheers.

Page 147 in the PDF shows all TVR emissions limits. This is the 18th edition.
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...
The limits shown in the table are:
0.5% CO at idle
idle speed 700-900rpm
0.3% CO at fast idle (2,500-3,000rpm)
200ppm hydrocarbons
0.9-1.1 lambda
oil temp min 75c
These are lower than modern cars but without cats you may/may not make a pass depending on the state of tune/ECU of your car.

Most choose to just put the cat back in place, it’s not that difficult if you have clamps and do your own maintenance.
Bolts probably a lot more fiddly.
There's a huge number of 'friendly' mot places. There are many Lotus drivers and 'max power' kids who have fully open exhausts. The TVR element is a very small part of a much bigger picture, it's just a case of asking around.Bolts probably a lot more fiddly.
Alright all, I've got a 98 chimaera and when she was in for her last mot the tester said it came up on the computer that she didn't need an emmisons test, she passed anyway, but this seems to be a very grey area, is it more to do with the age of the engine, I know that was the case with my Westfield

That doesn't sound right, emissions tests are related to year of registration of the vehicle not the engine. A '98 car will require a maim cat to pass the emissions test. The cut off date was around '95 for the more stringent emissions testLitcoat said:

The emissions test to which a vehicle is subject will depend upon its date of first use(i.e. date of registration or date of manufacture if used abroad before first registration
in the UK) as follows:
For vehicles first used before 1 August 1975 a visual test will be applied.
For vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1975 a metered test will be applied.
On 1 January 1996 a new test was introduced for petrol fuelled passenger cars fitted
with advanced emissions control systems such as three way catalytic converters.
The test applies to:
Passenger cars
first used on or after 1 August 1992 and mentioned in the
Annex to this publication.
All passenger cars first used on or after 1 August 1995.
Your TVR definitely needs an emissions test.

As for the Westfield, as a 'kit car' this is the rule:
Emissions Testing Kit Cars and Amateur Built Vehicles first used on or after 1st August 1998
These vehicles are required to obtain Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) and will receive an emissions test at SVA. All petrol and gas propelled kit cars or amateur built vehicles first used on or after 1st August 1998 (S Registration Onward) are subject to the BET test (basic emissions test), followed if necessary by a ‘cat test’ to default values.
The only exemption to this is where evidence is supplied by the presenter to confirm a lesser test is required i.e. age of engine or the emission standard applied at SVA.

Brian, I see you are in London. If you have difficulty in finding a place I can let you know where I go in the Dorking area. It might be worth a run out.
Equally, if you are more North London I can help with someone in Watford. I've been fully de-catted for some six years years now, six MoT passes with no advisories, during this period my original cat Y piece has remained in storage

Cheers for the offers chaps, I'm more North East London.
MoT isn't due until September, and it flew through the last one with no pre-cats and no advisories.
Pretty sure the owner of the garage liked the car after chatting with him for a while, and the fact we're from the same area in London. So could be 'friendly come MoT time.
It does seem a grey area though...
