I have read a few threads on here about fitting a 36-1 trigger wheel on a serp and came across all sorts of views about it being difficult to do, that the crank pulley will need rebalancing, and that I could trash my crank if it was done incorrectly.

Like most things on here it seems that topics written about 10 years ago that were described as difficult, pop up more recently where someone has developed a solution that is much simpler.

To those who installed aftermarket ecus, did you fit one of those available from triggerwheels.com and how did you fit it?

I have used one of the wheels from triggerwheels but it was on my old pre serp pulley. Does the job fine. In an ideal world you would have the pulley n trigger wheel zero balanced, but dont worry it will be fine just adding the trigger wheel.

Since going to a serp front end i now use one of John Eales competition front pulleys and trigger wheel. Plus he zero balanced it.

Find one of these. Ford transit trigger wheel.

Fit it between the damper and the pulley. It is only about 1.5mm thick so does not effect the alignment of the belts unlike the 6mm thick version from triggerwheels.
In this pick you can see it fitted. this one is back filled with silicon as it is on an off road machine where you do not want mud and stones jambed inside it.

Works well.

I machined off the redundant mud guard lip to allow the trigger wheel to mount here without altering pulley alignment (mine was already spot on) retaining all the balance weights (inc the studding rod) for a short period knowing that the rotating assembly was going to be re-balanced anyway wink I like the Transit TDCI wheel (pictured above) but not the chemical metal idea eek Phazed has the rather neat John Eales smaller TW IIRC biggrin ........

Are you referring to the silicon sealant?
As I said it was only used to stop mud and stones getting between or behind the wheel. Only needed due to the off road use.

The Transit part looks good, although even though there is a pic with various numbers on I cant find it online.

It seems that the triggerwheel one pops up in various kits I have come across and from the posted pic, it looks like it goes between the rear face of the pulley and the plate with the weight number on it.

To do this, how much of the lip around the rear face did you machine off and will it affect that weight that is welded there?

The JE wheel also looks like a good option, but will they need my pulley in to do it or is it an off the shelf product? At £125.00 once you factor the cost of a triggerwheels one, with the bracket assembly and spacer as extra, it's only about 70 quid more.

The JE one also comes with a nice billett crank sensor holder that fits straight onto your timing cover.

I'm tempted to go with the JE for simplicity but I am strangely tempted about going with the one that comes in the EFI extra kit which looks like a triggerwheel.com one.

I mean why go the easy route if there is a challenge there waiting?
