Leaving the roadworks at the top of the M6 I accelerated to 70 and pulled out to pass the slower traffic. Then it all went a bit crazy. The revs were bouncing off the limiter. Lifted off the throttle and no change. Thankfully the motorway wasn't so busy so I killed the engine and made it over to the hard shoulder.

A quick check and the carpet had gathered and collected the throttle jamming it down. Said carpet is now in the boot and underpants are in the bin. What do I need to do to hold it more firmly in place?

I'm also quite liking the carpetless look.

Some cars have a wide strip of velcro just in front of the seat. Others have a pair of plastic rivets passing through the carpet and the floor. Again just in front of the seat.
The rivets would be the easiest for an existing carpet set.

A lucky escape, sounds like you handled it very well though bow

We all think we're driving Gods but the truth is it's all too easy to panic in such situations, so in my book you did well to stay calm and in control.... and come out of it only losing a pair of keks eek

Respect, and thanks for posting, your contribution should prompt us all do do a carpet check, by sharing your experience you could be helping save your fellow enthusiasts from the same fate.

That's a very generous response. I'm surprised how calm I was.

Back to the carpet. I have no velcro and no fasteners. It's a 94 M so maybe it never had either.

It has got me thinking whether I bother with the floor carpet if I ever get the interior revamped. Kind of like a Singer.

How about some rubber floor matting? Lots of styles and choices. If you use double sided tape, it will hold okay. And less chance of the floor drumming. Easy clean too (my '94 does not have studs or velcro either)
Something like this?

For the next few weeks it's staying naked. But rubber could work.

when I first got my car many many years ago I noticed the carpet mat sliding into the foot well, so I cut some thin hardboard to the shape of the mat and glued the carpet mat to it and it keeps it's shape and doesn't move ..

I fixed mine in place with double sided Velcro bought from Amazon. Simple to brush floor clean and attach Velcro to it and then stick other side to carpet and press together.
