Before I head for a new / rfurb alternator, have I missed anything. New 100a fuse, new serp belt, battery light on all the time, less than 12v across the battery as well as the big alternator lead less on tickover, full 12v at the excitor lead. To my thinking it's a gonner? Cheers

The simple answer is to find a local Chim or Griff owner in Sarf Wayels who is happy to let you try his alternator on your car. Measure voltages with it on his car first, then swap it onto yours. If he feels really brave, put your alternator on his car and test. If you lived near me, we would be doing this tomorrow morning.

From a Land Rover parts centre.
Someone will be along shortly with a LR part number.

They can be fixed and repair kits are available but the job normally involves unsoldering some heavy wires to remove the diode pack etc plus soldering it all back together again. Needs a heavy duty soldering iron.
Not a difficult job but time consuming which is OK if doing it for yourself but no good if trying to run a business.

Part number is AMR 4247. Should be about £110 bought wisely. Denso or Magnetti Marelli. If Skinflint is your middle name, there is a used Tampora one on EBay at £60.

If you have less than 14V output at the alternator, then it’s dead, which by the sound of it is the case. I recently bought one from a local motor factor for abou £70. This was 75 amp, where as the one I took off was 55 amp.

If you want quality genuine.

I have a working spare with a broken bottom mount if you wanted to test it, too much of a faff to repair but if you have the time and equipment.
I also have a spare casing courtesy of Steve D if you want to try and build one good one but it’s hardly worth it for such a key piece of equipment.

The one in mine is 100amp, so a lower amp one will do the job?

I'd have thought so, the original 100 amp unit was intended for a Range Rover which no doubt has a lot more electrical accessories than a Chimaera.... scratchchin

Just a quick update, did a quick test on the diode bridge and was ok. Bought a new regulator for £25 delivered and a nice 14v at the battery.
