Good Evening,

New in these parts.

A pal, who I hadn't seen for a couple of years popped by the other day - with his speed six tuscan. Great soundtack....

this has re-ignited a TVR interest. I first found PH whilst looking for info on Cerberas (never did get one, as moved overseas for a bit) Anyhow, a quick perusal of the classifieds suggest a Chimaera may be just about in budget, and I have just renovated our garage so it's properly weatherproof.

I know there must be loads of good info on this sub forum, I'd be grateful of any links to particular threads.

heres a few of the things I am wondering about

I am guessing that insurance can be fairly cheap on a classic policy?

Whats the current feeling about annual running costs? back in the day £3k a year was cited to keep a cerb in tip top shape.

I was under the impression that the Rover V8 based cars were more reliable than the home brew motors in other models?

Apart from chassis corrosion are there any particular issues that the Chimera suffers?

grateful for tips

Edit to add: Just found the buying guide, which is a helpful start (couldn't easily see all the links earlier, browsing on my phone!)

I pay about £140 for 5k / year with Footman Jones, they seem quite popular.
Yes the chassis certainly is no 1, personally in 2.5 years I just have a yearly service and then replaced a few things like suspension and bushes, cracked dash, but these were known in the beginning, I don’t see any other yearly costs as such, so quite cheap in my opinion

I dont know what your budget is but try to look for cars with some of the troublesome areas rectified already, such as alarm, outriggers/chassis condition.
They dont need huge amounts spending on maintenance, they are very basic cars all be it awkward to work on.
This is an example of a good car for sale by a pistonheader, be warned that the advert below is a SCAM that i have reported but the car may still be for sale.
I can link you to the forum username if required.

Thanks chaps. Budget less than 20k i am hoping to get over to hexham, soon, they seem to have a couple in stock, one of which is on original outriggers.

I think i might already have a feeling for the answer to my next question but whats the consensus on the “salvage” place in northumberland. Pm if you prefer!

Thats a very healthy budget and i would expect you to be able to get a mostly restored car for that.

Are you looking for a keeper?

If so, don't worry too much about what may or may not need doing. Over 10 years a lot of fun can be had and the money paid out long forgotten.

£20k can buy a lot.

Chimp.
Grief.
V6S.
V8S.
Wedge.

£15k should be more than enough to get a very clean - ie no jobs need doing - V8S.

£12k should get one of the bigger SE Wedges in same condition.

£10k should get a V6S.

£15k should get you a useable 500, 450 or 430 Chimp.

£18k should get you a good 430 or 400 Grief.

Don't discount the 430 engined cars. BV heads, enlarged intake components make a very nice package.

All good stuff.
I had discounted the s series, as there dont seem to be so many about, but a quick check on the classifieds shows one (290) fairly close, so might be worth a look. Although i had v8 in mind....

Not keen on wedges. I’d still really like a cerb, but dont think my pokets are deep enough

I’d like to think this oroject would be a keeper, and hopefully a regular use item - i ran a morgan 4/4 as a daily driver for 4 years, so i know this type of use increases maintenance

I would travel to get the right car. I've bought TVRs from across the country. Well worth the travel.

plan is not to spend all on car, but have some in the kitty to cover issues for a while. I know from previously having run lightly used, handmade, british cars, that issues associated with sparse previous use pop up and can take a while and some cash to put right.

would you say it is more cost effective to look at cars with big item such as chassis work done?
