Odometer packed in
Discussion
So I've had over the past couple of years the odometer stick when turning over first at 80000 (getting stuck at 79999) then at 90000 (again sticking at 89999) and it eventually freed up and carried on however it has now stuck at 90499/500 and i've done a lot of miles since (probably a couple of thousand) and it shows no signs of starting again. Tried the banging dash top method to unstick while driving at both low and high speed. I think it's failed or permanently stuck.
Now being me I want to strip it and see what's wrong, could it be old grease that's dried up and gone hard (had this killing Shimano STi 90's gear shifters and a soak in brake cleaner followed by application of new spray grease sorted these out) or could it be broken drive gears? Anyone had them apart to see why they stop?
Worst scenario I contact Caerbont and get a new one but I'd rather fix mine, if it is broken gears has anyone had any luck in obtaining new ones?
Carl.

Caerbont don't sell the analogue display type anymore, only the ones with LCD display, and they won't fix it, the spares for these are no longer available.
It's usually the motor driving the odometer that gets old and tired. It's digital supply but analogue display so no mechanical input.
JDO Instruments may be able to?

Try this......it really works, it did on mine.
Take dash top off.
Loosen the speedo
Turn it upside down (ie rotate 180 degrees)
Jack rear wheels off the ground
Start the car and in 2nd gear run it at about 30mph
While running tap the speedo body and hopefully it will click over and start going again.
In my case it watch stuck on 199999 it now been running fine and is on 214000

Ah, that's useful information, if it's motor related a strip, clean (cleaning commutator, removing brush debris and checking brushes) and rebuild may get it going again if it's just got bad contacts making it weak. We used to have to do this in RC racing before we got brushless motors to keep them in tip top condition and I revived an Impreza window motor in that same way (although it did later fail as the one shot mechanism kills one section of the commutator by over heating it). Otherwise there isn't much in it between a pro rebuild and a new digital one from Caerbont price wise.

I may try this and just drive it around with the speedo upside down for a few days.Take dash top off.
