Anyone know how to get to the back of the speedo - and whether or not it has one bulb or two.

Mine is about half as bright as the rest of the instruments - so I'm assuming one of the bulbs is out (if there are two!!).

Also get a 'clicking' - same area - are they still cable driven from the gearbox as old Rover V8's were ??

Regards

I think they are all like that. One bulb.
Speedo is not cable driven. Drive is from a sensor on the drivetrain.

If the speedo is slightly less bright than the other instruments you can do what I did - replace the current bulb (3w I think) with a brighter one (6W in my case). I only have one speedo bulb due to the odometer being where the second bulb would go ('95 model). Now all my instruments are equally bright.

Thanks - I'll try the brighter bulb route - how did you get to the back of the speedo ???

I seems like you will either have to have your hands/arms genetically re-enginered or send it back to the factory !!!!!

Take the dash top cover off. The clicking may also be the infamous 1/10th mile odometer but as you don't give any details on the year of the car difficult to confirm. ALl covered in't bible.

Cheers Steve,

Its a 98 4 ltr Chimaera

Got 3 nuts/washers off to get dash top off - cant find the last one - still won't come off (2 hours of pain for nothing !!) - and I think I need a fortune in Chiropractic treament to sort my back out now !!

Bible ordered - waiting delivery - any idea where the fixing bolts are - I'm also not looking forward to trying to get it all back together !! Wish I'd left the damn bulb as it was ........

I'm guessing the bolt you can't find is the RH one - it's a b1tch. There is a pic (which doesn't show it that well) on my website:

It's not too hard once you know where to look. Speedo bulb is easy to get out.

Roy,
If you find out what the 'clicking' noise is, please let me know, I've got it too and it drives me mad. Sort of like someone tapping to get out.(Maybe it is).

The Click sounds like the 10th Wheel as Steve says.. mine does it too but after a while you really don't notice it.

Cheers
Matt.

You will find the right hand bolt is too long to get it out. You will have to undo the second nut holding the bolt to the dash which will enable you to shove the bolt outwards so it comes free from the car. Once you have got the dash top off, cut the bolt to make it shorter, this will enable the dash top to go on easier. You may still have to play about with the second nut, but you will find that a flat spanner will go between the dash top and the dash adjacent to the screen.

Quick tip from past posts...

Replace the nuts with 'wing nuts' when replacing the dash. It's a lot easier next time.

You don't need to remove the dash top completely, just the LHS and pivot it up over. Dim bulb problem could just be that the bulb has started to fall out the holder in the rear of the instrument. Been there, done that.
