Clunking Noise
Discussion
Yep - it's the knuckle joints on the steering rack i.e. the small universal joints - they get a bit of wear and start clunking. My 1999 Chimaera had the same problem, and was going to be repaired under warranty, but since the mechanic looked at it, it hasn't done it any more. It is simple and not too expensive to rectify.
As long as the steering doesn't actually seize up it's safe to drive - it's not about to fall off or anything. I found that penetrating oil (not WD40) helped a lot but was only a temporary fix.
The replacement UJ isn't expensive and its easy to fit.
It's well worth fitting a boot around the upper UJ after you're replaced it, to keep the muck out and protect it from exhaust heat. You can do this for the lower one too, but the upper UJ is the one that really needs it.

Many Thanks Nubbin. Is it safe to still drive for a while? Its due for a service so i can get them to sort it when it goes in next week?
quote:Yes. I'm still driving mine with no repair - I've done 6000 miles since it first clunked, and I'm still here! ( PS I've changed my login name - this is Nubbin speaking!) Edited by chuckles on Friday 2nd February 10:15 Edited by chuckles on Friday 2nd February 10:17
