XKR 100k service
Discussion
My 2005MY 4.2 XKR has just ticked over to 100k at the weekend driving up to Brands Hatch for the CTCRC meet, I am planning to get the chain and tensioners replaced, which I've been told is an engine-out job, I was going to get a quote from the local main dealer (grange Exeter) as well as a local specialist, but I was wondering what else I should get done at the same time, I'd like to get it running perfectly. (won't want the engine out again!)
I was going to get the gearbox oil flushed, and hoping to get the tsb's applied too.
I have a clicking/chattering noise from the gearbox I guess, coming from behind/under the dash which happens only on part throttle in sports mode or locked into gear, when balancing the throttle holding revs, it's a clean sound as in not grinding, but quite loud.
Sometimes it refuses to change gear, this got better after the last service when the abs sensor failed.
The check rear light comes on even though they are all working, only comes on sometimes well into a journey.
The headlamps sometime Flicker off on hard acceleration.
I have fitted a Larini exhaust and about to fit a green air filter, but I'm sure it feels more sluggish with it on, despite it being full bore over the diff, and supposed to add power. It does sound great though!
Sorry for the download, but I wanted some advice before leaving at the mercy of a garage.

Hi Tom
Hope you and the wife are well.
Firstly, tensioners and chains can be done without the engine coming out. Radiators & hoses need taking away then covers and engine front casing. Be careful using the Jag main dealers, they will want £2000 to do this job.
With the list of things you want looking at, I would expect a bill of £3000 from Grange.
My recommendation would be to get in touch with Keith & Saroya at DesignXKR
http://www.designxkr.co.uk/index.htm
They will spend time listening to your issues and worries & then recommend a plan of action. I want my tensioners replacing with gen3 ones, but ive just spent money on her bodywork, so it'll wait until July but I will be going here for them.
They will do your tensioners for £950 and change your gearbox oil for £160 or more on Shell oil.
All they work on are XK's so they have the knowledge.

Tom,
I'll be interested to see how you get on. A full report on what's discovered will be really useful information, to me at least.
I have a 4.2 S-Type (not the R) registered December 2003 and it's just gone through 100,000 miles too. I've had it since 14 miles only ie essentially from new. Wisdom seems to be there's little need to attend to the tensioners etc as they will be the third and most dependable derivitive. I have discussed replacement with my local JMD in Guildford and they have told me they have never done the tensioners etc on a 4.2. My earlier post on this subject on the PH Jaguar site got limited response. I wrote to Jaguar World and they advised that it would be a good plan to renew them and the chains and the water pump and thermostat etc if I intended to keep the car (see JWM May 2011 page 80).
So, I must admit I'm in a bit of a dilemma: do I pay up around £1300 or so for peace of mind now or continue for maybe another year and then get the job done at around 115,000 miles...hmm. The car is under a Jaguar warranty until the end of this year.

Hi, yes we are doing fine cheers, you'll have to let us know if your doing any local blasts, I keep meaning to do the cheddar gorge meet.
Thanks, is shell oil correct in the gearbox? I thought I heard somewhere it can cause problems unless you flush the whole system as it doesn't mix with the standard oil that will still be present, but does that involve detaching from the torque converter? I have the 6 speed ZF, which is completely different to the 5 speed Jag gearbox.
I was going to get a green cotton panel filter, straight replace btw.

Grange have now quoted for the work, £1699 for the chain, tensioners and oil cooling pipes, and £379 for the gearbox oil change including tsb's, they heard the sound although it's coming from the engine, could be the chain, very noisy though, or bearings on the crankshaft or something, said they'd check with a stethoscope to ensure it's the chain before continuing as otherwise it could be an engine rebuild/replace.
Waiting to hear back from my local specialist, but I think they're quoting similar money, bit less.
I'd end up spending what I save further afield in fuel and time off work unfortunately.
I guess the chain is probably ok, but it's not a pleasant sound chattering away, ruins the experience, so it's only worth changing if the noise bothers you, and not worth doing if it's under warranty I would imagine.

Both prices seem very high. We do the timing chain upgrade for £950 + vat. Gearbox oil change price is very high too.Waiting to hear back from my local specialist, but I think they're quoting similar money, bit less.
We also provide a courtesy car.
Hmm, my local Jaguar specialist (independant) has quoted me £1336 + £333 respectively + VAT, so that equates to just over £2,000 either way. both including a oil & filter service.
I think on this occassion, I like the idea of it going to the main dealer, they are literally on my doorstep, and there is a number of TSB's on the car that they will do as part of it.
@DesignXKR, cheers, if I was closer it would be an option to pop in and discuss, and whilst I can see you're saving money by not bothering with your website
LOL, how can you do it cheaper, Jaguar say the genuine parts are £600+VAT, and they allow 10 hours labour?

Not sure what you mean about the website. We have one and it is being updated currently. As for Jaguar, they will be quoting you the full retail price for the parts not trade prices. We only use genuine Jaguar parts when we do the upgrade.I think on this occassion, I like the idea of it going to the main dealer, they are literally on my doorstep, and there is a number of TSB's on the car that they will do as part of it.

BTW It's not an upgrade, it's a late model 4.2 that will have the latest tensioners, it's just to replace them as a preventative measure.
Anyway, it might all be for nothing, the noise coming from the engine, they're not 100% it's the chain, they will investigate and let me know first, crank bearings? a/c pump? fuel pump? torque converter? Loose bolt?!! No idea, although it makes the noise in Park holding the revs at 3 - 4k. No vibrations, just the noise.
Sorry about the website poke, I don't see homemade websites very often anymore. (I'm a techie, so I probably notice more than others)
Anyway, they're letting me have a V8 vantage as a courtesy car as they're the Aston Martin dealership as well *

- this is almost certainly not true, it's a XF diesel, just dreaming!! LOL.
