I have been told that the cure for "the sound of a flock of seagulls following my car around" is rear wishbone bushes. Also a lower bush adjacent to the wheel was pointed out to me as there is excessive movement rocking the wheel top to bottom when its jacked up.

It looks like the bushes are difficult to obtain, and I am hoping that I don't have to fork out for two new rear wishbones.

The mechanic has said definitively that this is the problem and it makes sense to do both side.

Anyone got any thoughts on this, I don't want to buy second hand wishbones through fear of a similar issue.

The car does have polybushes on the front end, though I am not anticipating poly bushes for the back.

Thanks

First off, I'm not dissing what the mechanic is saying. He saw the car and diagnosed a problem. Here is what I would do. Jack the rear of the car up yourself, axle stands, safety etc. At the 12 o'clock position, push the tyre in towards the wheel arch. Does it move? Play is acceptable here but I don't know how much is allowed - this would highlight diff output shaft bearings +/- worn UJs. Is this movement what you saw at the garage. Grab the tyre at the 6 o'clock position and try to push and pull. Do you see any movement at lower wishbone bushes? (I'd would not have thought this a good way to highlight wishbone bush wear - but I'm open to advice) Next grab tyre at 3 and 9 o'clock positions, rock tyre. Check play at lower wishbone bush and outer pivot pin and consider wheel bearing play also. The only bushes near the wheel are the shock bush and the rear (A) subframe bush. I removed a diff the other day on an x300 and the only way I can see to get to those wishbone bushes are with the diff out. I'm not sure if the x308 is any different.

I got my x308 xjr bushes here:

...after Jag/indy had told me that OEM bushes were sold as part of a kit which was very expensive.
