Thinking of one of these. Just wanted feedback from any owners. Thinking of Luxury model. What options are worth having? What sort of mpg do you get? Is the ride impacted by 19" wheels? How driveable is it in Snow?

Any input appreciated

Hi John, I'm on my 3rd currently. Absolutely smashing cars, great ride and plenty of go in them! As for the extras, reversing camera is a must, not so much for the camera (which is awesome) but more the fact that it also gives you the front parking sensors, which on the XF are a bit of a must. Xenon's too are a plus, as for the rest, if you're into your IPods etc, then the connectivity kit. Other than that, they come pretty much loaded. Take into account the facelift model comes out in September, but it also comes with a hefty price hike too. As for the winter driving, I lived in Germany for a while and put winter tyres on the car, it turns it from useless to more than capable, on the XF the correct tyres are a must. Have a look on the XFForum for some more info specific to the model.

The seats are the only let down on the non-S/R models. The facelift car has much better seats - full stop. You will never have an issue with ride quality on any Jag with any size wheel.

MPG- mid 30's.

Go for the 3.0 S......

34mpg over 10K miles Average - mainly M/way and open road, small amount of urban.

More get up and go than you'll ever need - rapid cross country.

Demolishes continents for European touring - 530mile tank range.

Ride on 20" wheels was good - on 19"'s it'll be even better.

Get the Diesel S with the XFR seats and you'll heat the seating sweet spot.

Snow - rear wheel drive was a major struggle in last year's snow. I resorted to snow snocks. A revelation!

If you are coming from an Audi as your username suggests, you'll have a car that handles AND rides!

My father is on his second - the first a Luxury 3.0D and the second is a Premium Luxury 3.0D with 20" wheels.
The ride is just fine, though I agree with some of the others, the seats could be more supportive, but then they are comfy - it's designed as a cruiser isn't it!

Go for it - they're brilliant. I can put you in contact with a good Jag Salesman if you wish.

Interesting - heavy RWD cars are useless in snow.

I thought that once the fabric of the sock got impregnated with packed snow it would be useless; how do they retain grip?

Can only base on experience of the fairly deep powdery stuff we had last year. The socks when removed were wet, saturated through the fabric, but snow didn't stick to it if it makes sense.

Back on topic - XF 3.0D - normal one has 500Nm - XF Diesel "S" has 600Nm. Easy choice thumbup

Most problably looking at 12 month old up to £30K so not sure if 'S' will be achievable. Thanks for all the info which is really helpful. Assume upodated model will impact prices on current model so maybe worth waiting until after it is released.

I have had 7 months and 11000 miles with my 'S' and I would thoroughly recommend the car with just a couple of concerns.

Average of 35mpg over 11000 miles ( mostly motorway ) with a best of 46 when cruising at a true 70mph. Good but not quite as good as the official figures suggest.

The ride even on 20" wheels is great and the general level of refinement is excellent. I found the seats perfectly fine.

One surprising thing to me is the difference the 'dynamic' mode makes to the cars behaviour, I'd recommend trying it on the test drive, I always select it as I find the response much more natural and I'm not quite sure why but the fuel consumption is better too.

The only concern I have is the brakes. A couple of months ago having put 7000 miles on the car ( I bought it with 10k miles at 13 months old as an ex jag management car ) I went to the local dealer with brake vibration. This ended up with both front and rear discs & pads needing immediate replacement at 17000 miles! Fortunately after some discussion Jaguar agreed to cover the +£1000 repair bill under warranty due to excessive wear rate. I'm more than satisfied with the response from Jaguar but it did cause me some concern.

This is the only real negative though, I still find myself looking back at it as I walk away and its been nice to buy a locally made car which is on a par but different to the German competition. smile

As it was an ex-Jag management car,I wonder if the excessive wear was because the car had a previous life as a demonstrator on one of their Racing Heart track days?

I think I might have the standard seats - they don't look any different to the normal ones but dont have the higher side bolsters of the sports seats I saw on the newer cars - maybe it was an early 'S' ?

As for the history.. well it wouldn't surprise me as Jaguar covered the work without undue effort on my part, all I could go on when I bought it was the condition inside and out and the mileage/spec which all seemed good, I'd love to try one of the track days myself, for a big car the XF makes progress surprisingly well!

Ahhh, you'd be right the first ones didn't have the 'R seats. The track days are great fun.

I have recently purchased 3.0 S Portfolio as it was easiest way to get all necessary bits mentioned.
Very good car -better than 5 series before.
On subject of winter conditions after one winter with BMW being almost undriveable on snow and ice I purchased as set of winter tyres and was amazed at transformation so have alreday sourced spares wheels and will order winter tyres for XF.Does not really cost a lot more as you do not wear out your summer tyres and it us much safer

I had an XF Portfolio for a year. Fantastic car, averaged 34/35 mpg over 12k miles of mixed driving. Terrible on snow and you should invest in snow tyres.

Drive a 5 series first if you're not convinced. XF is a much better car IMHO.

I has Msport 525i with 3litre engine 19" wheels(non run flat)XF rides and handles better and is more comfortable for driver and passengers-Jaguar diesel as smooth as BMW except on tickover.
Jag is just much nicer car to drive with more urge
Re winter tyres I became a bore telling people about them but really are worthwhile-I fitted vredestein and these were good- only Pirelli make size for XF so will order those

Was thinking that it maybe worth waiting until after September as with the 2012 models out then used models may fall a bit in price and also likely to get more for my Freelander 2 with winter approaching.

I've had an S Portfolio for just over a year and it's the most comfortable car i've ever driven. The seats are a joy to sit in, even over very long distances. The Portfolio comes very well loaded anyway, and I can't remember what was standard on mine that is an option on the Luxury and Premium Luxury i'm afraid.

If comfort is a major factor for you then definitely find one with the uprated (XFR) seats, although the standard seats are far from uncomfortable i'm told. As for options, I couldn't live without the parking pack that gives the reversing camera and front PDC. If you can stretch to it, and do a lot of motorway miles like I do, the Adaptive Cruise Control with Electronic Braking Assistance is a lovely addition to have.

On reflection, the only thing I wished I hadn't bothered with is the TV function. Even the voice control, which I was told wasn't very useful, is invaluable for changing screen functions without taking your eyes from the road.
