XKR Winter tyres
Discussion
Looks like I'm buying a house that has a 20 minute each way rural road drive to the station.
Buggered if I'm not going to use the XKR for it - no point in keeping it locked away when I've got actual, real driving to do.
But it makes a proper case for winter tyres.
1400 quid all round. FOURTEEN HUNDRED !!! Flippin eck tucker ! That's going to smart. At least I'm not wearing the summer tyres out while I'm wearing these babies through. I could actually get an entire station run snotter for that.

For £1400 I'd do as you semi-suggest and get a little car to run to station in. Thay way it won't be the XKR which gets salt damage on the wheels, bird crap all over it and wont be as costly if you leave the road because of black ice.
In the winter I run a 2004 Astra for this very reason!

WINTER TYRES !! was this idea thought up by a tyre company by any chance
A good premium brand sports tyre is equally as good in my opinion (ive asked a few people)
You could buy my 60k mile Clio 1.4 for 900 notes and save 500.
Have you tried driving a car with and without winter snow tyres in snow?A good premium brand sports tyre is equally as good in my opinion (ive asked a few people)

I don't know about your Jag but in snow mine is just about un-drivable. The Mrs'MB is also a rear wheel drive, torquey automatic and similarly is was hopeless in snow. Last year I bought her a set of winter tyres, not the most costly ones, they a Coopers, but they make the tyres for Avon, I believe. MrsA8 was a bit sceptical till it snowed total convert now. I couldn't believe how much difference they make. I fully understand why so many countries now mandate their use. Its not just in the snow either, on cold mornings I notice a considerable difference in the grip available, pulling out of junctions that the week before had the traction control warning flashing like mad you could put a lot more welly in without any protest now that the boots have been swapped over.
So me, I'm a total convert.
And in the long run it doesn't really cost to much either, as the OP said, while you're running the winters you ain't wearing down the summer boots.

I'm afraid on snow that's just not true. It isn't only about tyre tread depth, its about the rubber compound. You could buy my 60k mile Clio 1.4 for 900 notes and save 500.
I did the cheap runner thing last year and bought a Subaru Legacy for winter use. The costs of running two cars did seem to add up. This year, now I've got rid of the XJR I've gone for winter tyres for the XF. It'll be interesting to see what it is like.
I just did a quick mytyres search for winters in the size I'd have needed for the XJR, if I still had it. Over £300 per tyre...
me. Not far off your XKR prices.Gassing Station | Jaguar | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
