Hello Jaguars smile

I'm Currently driving a BMW 650i Coupe and looking to move to a Jag XKR Coupe. Can someone run me through the car please, never had a Jag before.

The BMW was rather easy to look after - do whatever the Idrive said, Brakes, Oil Service, Brake Fluid, Vehicle Check etc - it was all mileage based and spread out across the ownership of the car so no huge bills in one go. Whats it like with a Jag? How does the servicing work? Any ideas of costs appreciated.

I currently get around 18-22mpg around town with my 650i whats an XKR supercharged like on the fuel?

There are a few high milers around (60-65k miles +) - is there anything to look out for apart from a full Jag service history on these?

I have a comprehensive warranty with BMW - do Jaguar offer something similar - whats the warranty like?

Thanks in advance biggrin

I think much depends on budget. Pistonhead classifieds (look at XK's and XKR headings) or Jaguar approved used sites are good places to gain price and model intelligence.

There were updates in either 07 or 08 (think 08 MY) things like the radio aerial went (subject of muck mockery)

Dont expect BMW economy

If it has to be a 4.2 XKR, the XKR- S special edition might be worth thinking about

5.0 litre XK's are in or moving to the £30 - 35K window.

They are not far behind the 4.2 XKR, but more advanced and economical.

It is is possible to extend the warranty for 3+ years when the manufacturers runs out. I believe dealers put 12 months on cars, but I am not sure if Jaguar offer an extension, if so it will be expensive £1500 + perhaps based on experience with an 05.

Good Luck

A second thought look at Autocar, EVO or similar websites and the car reviews section.

Or type something into Google

I own this one:

It was a high mile example (over 70k), but felt really good and has been great so far. Having said that, I've not had it in for it's first service since yet. I'm averaging about 21-23mpg, so that sounds a little better than your old beemer, but depends on how leaden your right foot is!

I really enjoy the car and have found it very easy to live with for the past nine months, and it's very difficult to find anyone, anywhere with a bad word to say about them. Yes, if I had the money, I'd prefer the 5.0, and above that again a DB9, but for the £21k I spent on it, it's plenty fast and impressive and I'd struggle to think of somewhere better to put it.

Although not driving an XKR now, I made the exact same move from a 650 to an '07 XKR.

On balance and for value for money, I think the XKR was the best car I have ever owned. Such a nicer place to be than the BMW which i found functional but soul-less (sp!). I haven't driven the new 5.0l, but am told by everyone that it is an amazing engine - but the 4.2l is plenty quick enough, and mine never put a foot wrong.

With regard to MPG i don't remember the Jag being much if any worse then the BMW. Jag is definitely a great car, the only caveat is the seating - in the front it is an armchair - not too much support and forget about the back seats, you will not get anyone in there unless you have a midget in the front - I am 6ft 1", and my 5 yr old at the time could not fit behind me. That aside it is a brilliant car. Triple7 will likely be along shortly, he provided me with a lot of accurate inforamtion about the car and is also an advocate of the XKR.

There are some limited edition models out there, like the Portfolio I had which included LUX Pack and a few other bits and pieces and some improved exterior body styling - I would certainly advise trying to find one.

Happy Hunting!

Hi,

I purchased a 4.2 57 XK-R convertible last September from a Jag dealer in Farnham, coming from a 08 BMW 320D. To cover your questions...

Servicing seems to be year / mileage based. Mine has just had it's 4th year service at a total cost of £421 (oil / filters etc. don't have a full detail to hand). Not had anything additional flagged up (but they did some work before I picked it up, inc brakes)

MPG. Seems to get around about 20ish MPG according to the computer, depends on the driving (blasting around have seen 14, on a leisurely motorway cruise pretty much at NSL, 24). As ever, depends on the driver's foot weight...

Around 60K ish if not before I intend to get the "sealed for life" gearbox and diff oils changed...

Warranty. Jag approved 12 months with the vehicle. I beleive I can renew that at expiry. Not had cause to use it yet so cannot confirm what they would try to wriggle out of...

Lastly.. Love the XK-R and will drive it at the drop of a hat. Rear space is very limited however my 6 year old does fit on a booster in the back, and he loves the car (I am < 6.1)

Worth getting over to XKEC as well..

Yes, new gearbox oil at 60k is a must as well as diff and supercharger oil (not on the dealers list)

+1 for the xkec as well

Re Jaguar warannty, I had it with my almost new S-Type for the regular three years and then subsequently renewed it for each of the next 5 years. I'd still be renewing it if I could but as it's now done over 100,000 miles Jaguar will no longer extend the warranty.

I believe it's the case that a Jaguar warranty can be extended on a year by year basis up to the end of the year it gets to 100,000 miles, as I achieved, BUT the extention has to be continuous: if there's a break at all it's possible to get a warranty but not from Jaguar.

Thanks - any idea of costs on doing this? Seems like these are better than the BMW 6 series but a little more TLC required at the same time resulting in a little more money to be spent!

Oh yeah, should mention that I run it as my "family car". However, the nipper isn't 7 months old yet, and if I were 5"9' rather than 5"8' then I would have been stuffed getting a rear facing seat in the back. Will be better from next month when she moves to the forward facer - then I can stop knocking my knees on the dash....

The beemer is a bit more practical, I think, but you're loosing out in every other sense to the Jag.
