I've got an XJ6 (X300) and after not using it for the last couple of weeks, there is an odd grinding noise (that comes from the brakes?) just before the car comes to a complete stop.

The brakes seem to work fine (nothing wrong with the pedal travel or any untoward noises) and if I put the car into neutral and brake to a stop, the car doesn't make any noise.

Does anyone have any ideas what this might be/if something needs to be replaced?

Cheers

Lightly corroded discs from lack of use or severely worn pads would be my first guess. Suggest you have the pads and discs checked asap. If it's just a light corrosion layer then use will sort it.

Some XJs will make a short sharp groaning noise from the brakes when coming to a halt, especially when cold. This is often due to a light glaze building up on the discs and the cure is a long drive.

Hi Steve

Thanks for the advise - the discs don't look like they have any corrosion on them and the car has recently been MOTed so I don't think it is the pads either. I will take it to a garage to be looked at though.

Having said that, your description of a "short sharp groaning noise" is exactly what is happening (although I don't understand why it wouldn't happen when the car is in neutral rather than drive).

If you come to a full stop in neutral all the brakes are doing is stopping the car. If you come to a full stop in Drive the brakes are working against the weight of car as well as the idling engine torque.

That creeking juddery groan is quite common in automatics and is nothing to worry about. A recent MOT or a quick look at the discs is no proof the brakes are still OK - I'd get them checked as soon as.

I'd describe it as a creaking/groaning noise. I agree it's nothing to worry about. My old X300 did this so does my X308 - even after new Brembo discs and pads (that's not why I replaced them, BTW. They were shagged.)
