Evening all. Just wondering if the masses had experience of the above.
I have a rather nice 1997 xjr x308, that I've had for 4 years. Had the tensioners/chains done, all oils engine and transmission regularly changed.
This morning, started car up, went into reverse ok, but would not go into drive or any other forward gears. left it in drive for a while and eventually car crept forward, and all was ok. went to work.
This evening, same again but after 100yds or so the yellow gearbox light came on, car stayed in same gear 3rd or 4th I think,irrespective of what gear I selected. Light stayed on all the way home. I then turned car off, then back on again, and all was well, went for drive all gears ok, sport ok, kickdown ok. Have to wait to see what happens tomorrow.
Any Ideas to whether this might be mechanical or electrical,or has anybody suffered same symptoms.

The X308 XJR has a Mercedes Benz gearbox. It is notorious for fluid leaking out around the electrical connector, causing intermittant electrical contact. If you read the OBD codes, number 0715 frequently pops up with this fault. This code throws a yellow MIL light and 'Gearbox fault' message and puts the 'box in limp mode. I've had it go into both mechanical and electrical limp mode with this fault.
Firstly, check if there is evidence of fluid near the connector. If there is, a temporary fix is to just clean it.
The repair for this is to replace the part that allows electrical contact to the command card inside the gearbox. It has 2 O-rings which you can replace but the part (called a pilot bush) was modified to reduce failure, so fit a new one. It's only £15+VAT from your local Merc main dealer and very easy to fit.
Drain about 2 litres of fluid from the box. Remove harness connector. Unscrew the centre retaining bolt and withdraw old pilot bush. Fit new pilot bush. Clean harness connector and refit. Put the fluid back in or add new fluid - £9/l from Mercedes.
