Am I a Jaguar snob in thinking that the X model is not a "true" Jaguar ? I looked at buying an S model before settling on an XJ8, but was put off the X model on learning the chassis was a Ford Mondeo.Am I too much od a purist ?

I do know what you mean, but I think you probably are.
The X-type is as much a Jaguar as most Audis are "real Audis" - rather than being a souped up VW. It is strange how the S-Type and XF escape this charge when they share so much with Ford's Lincoln LS.

I have an XJ40 which some purists say isn't a proper Jag either - I have seen that written about them on PH. Your 2000MY XJ8 is basically a re-engined facelifted XJ40 so those people probably think yours isn't a proper Jag as well!! wink

Yes it has Mondeo chassis and running gear, but it is a Jag. I love my SE estate

The Swallow was the first Jaguar, this was bassed on the Austin 7

Jaguar have often used other manufactures products

So has any Jaguar been a true Jaguar

Whilst I'd rather have an X-Type than the equivalent BMW, Audi etc, I know what he means. If you drove an X-Type and then an XJ6 there'd be one heck of a difference.

But then, the X-Type was made for a different market and to a price of £20K, so it's all fair really.

As an S-Type driver I get the 'but it's really a Ford Mondeo' jibe as well. I tell them it's based on a Lincoln Town Car and they shut up smile If having Ford bits makes it better or more reliable, I don't mind too much.

I wouldn't try to compare the X type with the XJ, they are in a different class, it's like putting a C class merc against the S class. I remember someone on here saying the X type shares 17% of it's components with the mondeo, also remember the mondeo is still a great car, I still use one as my work/dog car and carn't fault it. I would have an X type over most of the other cars in it's class, go for a high spec model with leather etc.

It's based on a Mondeo but very much modified in the chassis and drivetrain (AWD).

Mine's an AWD and feels quite Jag-like with the rear bias.

Utterly love mine and the fact that all the service parts are cheap as chips Ford.

It feels like a Jag and looks like one, but just a bit further away biggrin Pale leather and wood suit the old school interior layout smile

Doesn't the X350 and onwards XJs and the newer XKs derive their suspension from the S-Type (modern not real S-type / Mk3) so that that also mean they're Lincons?

OK, so I realise I'm taking the p*%$

Don't waste time worrying about hat others may think, I had an X300 and to me it was a Jag, it didn't matter hat anybody else said, i felt good driving it. It would be the same if i got an X type, if people wanted to start with the ford jokes etc, that's fine. Get yourself a 3 litre manual and you won't hang around long enough to hear it!

Well, I once got told (by my X-type owning, GF's dad) that my V12 XJ-S wasn't a 'proper' Jaguar so I guess everyone has their own opinion.

I think I'd have to drive one to know.

Is the Aston Martin Db7 an Aston or a Jag

Is a Porche Cayenne a Porche or VW Toureg

Is a RR Ghost a Rolls or A BMW 7 series.

There are few cars now without shared patforms, engines or other major parts.

Dont think it matters - I think that like many Jags - they get better with age.

I look at smart X types now and can see the Jaguar in them and think they look really good ( particularly sports), I think they still had a life if developed further.

Jag needs a more affordable entry level model

My question was not intended to offend X type owners. They're a great looking car and I haven't driven one so I don't know how they perform. Iam curious about one point......did they not produce an 8 cylinder model ?

Oh I give up rolleyes

The Xtype has a differnet width, length, wheelbase and track. The floorplan is different as they never made a rwd mondeo, and the X-type has a transmission tunnel because it has a propshaft, etc

the rear suspenion on the estate is the same as a MOndeos. But thats it

Still, it is a Mondeo in drag. Buy an Audi instead. Unique cars in every way. Not at all a skoda/seat/vw underneath...

In my opinion, no. Most of them sold are/ were fwd, 4 cylinder diseasals which are hardly defining qualities for a Jag.

So what "defines" a Jag?
A straight 6 or a V12?
A roofline that is low enough to let you park underneath the average Chelsea Tractor?
A magic carpet ride?

Some would argue that its the wood and leather, others would point out that Jaguar stopped fitting wood to their sports cars in 1957. (XJ-S, XJS, XK8 and the modern XK are GTs, then perhaps the first of the non wood sports cars was perhaps a GT too)

If you are going to drive a 4cylinder diesel does it really matter whether it is front of rear wheel drive?
