Hi guys,

I'm in the market for a new (used) car, been to BMW and Audi and tried a 5 series and an A5 (only ones I like from these manufacturers..)

Just come back from my local Jag dealer having tried a facelifted XF S diesel (white £47k). I wanted to try a pre facelifted model but they had sold the one i want to try, so they put me in one i didn't want..

anyway..

The test car had 20" wheels and jaguar adaptive dynamics pack. I have to say the car was very hard and you could feel every bump in the road.

I know the wheels would have something to do with this and the extra pack, but does the pre facelifted standard S with 20" wheels ride bumps and lumps ok? I wanted it to glide over bumps but still look good smile

Thanks

Andy

20” wheels tend to make the ride noticeably harder. Imho any jag is better on 18”. Tbe AD system is superb but was the car set to sport and dynamic modes?

i'd have a look at the Jaguar Approved Used website and Pistonheads before you do anything else to gain intelligence on the market.

£47k for a nearly new XF seems very steep to me, you can get a nearly new Xj for that. There are a lot of pre facelift S's around, you should get one for a lot less if you are a tough buyer.

I thought that BMW's and Audi's were pretty hard, particularly if they have wheels that look right in the arches.

I think Jag Design everything for 20's, smaller wheels probably ride better, but dont lokk quite right IMO.

Hi guys thanks for the responses.

@cardigankid i think it must have been the tyres, all we did was press the start button and set off, notihg else was turned on.

@SeanCW - as i said in my post mate they put me in a car I didnt want. The one I had booked a test drive in was a fully loaded 2010 model for £26k. The one they put me in was £47k, which was the only s diesel they had.

I'm going to keep a look out for one with smaller wheels, however most of the S Diesels (i have seen) come with 20" rims..

Will keep looking though.

At the price and therefore age you are looking at all Premium Luxury & Portfolio S's came with 20" alloys. Even the entry level Luxury S came with 19".
I have only ever sold one Luxury S as most people would rather have had the extra toys on a standard Premium Luxury for roughly the same price as Luxury with the more powerful engine.
The Dynamic suspension shouldn't make that much difference to the general feel of a non-dynamic car on 20's (nothing like a BMW M Sport for instance) but will of course be firmer than a car on 19's or 18's.

The Dynamic suspension is now standard on all diesel S models so must have been a popular option on the pre face lift cars after it was introduced in late 2009

I recently bought a 09 plate 3.0ds on 20" wheels and was warned to stay away from 20" wheels due to harsh ride.

Tests drices revealed that the 'S' seems to ride OK on 20" while others seem crashy.

I was told the supension is set up differently.

Edited as I lied about its age.

I think I will put the experience to bed and make a final judgement when i try a standard S model and not one @ £47k.

I thought it would woft over bumps, but felt them more in the XF than the A5 i tried a week earlier. Also there was a horrid rattle coming from the dash..

The one i tried had the following toys on it -

• 20" Dark Draco alloy wheels
• 60/40 split folding rear seat
• Blind Spot Monitor
• Front park aid
• Heated front screen
• Heated leather steering wheel
• R Performance Black Pack
• TRACKER system
• Television
• DAB Digital Radio
• Electric glass sunroof
• Electric sunblind
• JaguarSport interior
• Privacy glass
• Rear camera parking aid
• XF-S Pack
• Unique treadplates

Thanks for the input guys.

Andy

Whatever you do DO NOT BUY ONE WITHOUT THE FRONT AND REAR PARKING AIDS.

The shape of the car means you have no idea in hell where the car ends.

But do you not think that a lot if not all of the uniqueness has now gone however good the new package is?
