Guys,

Have a friend who owns a X308 3.2 V8 Jag and recently on cruising down the motorway at 70mph. all of a sudden, the engine died and they crusied to a halt on the hard shoulder.
No bangs, pops, shudders nothing. Couldn't restart the car. Starter just clicked.

They had the car towed back to home and the initial prognosis is that the engine seized.

I would have thought they would have heard something if this happened. ?

Now on turning the ignition on, the dash lights up but no warning lights are on that shouldn't be.
The starter does not crank just clicks.

Ian put a socket and bar on the bottom pulley to see if the motor would turn but it doesn't.

Anyone got any ideas as to what it could be before they find a garage to rip them off and fit a recon engine...

Sounds like a bottom end failure. Possibly crank failure.

Has it got any oil in it?

Have you tried the inertia cut out (when you have a collision it cuts off the engine and fuel pump). Have known it happen on an XK before so it maybe that.

Not sure where it is on a X308.

If you get stuck give us a call on 01264 333523 and Kevin may have some ideas.

If this was what happened, would Ian not be able to turn the motor over using the socket on the bottom pulley?

I am not a mechanic but the last time my x308 clicked and did not crank it was a duff battery. Cutting out on the motorway has been throttle body on a few XJ forums. But if the engine is seized then 'none of the above'
