Best way to value it is to look at what other similar cars are up for on Autotrader however that seems like a fair dealer price to me.

I assume you are aware of, and have checked this car out, re: chain tensioners, water pumps and (if it's done very few miles in the last ten years) nikasil issue?

have seen the car and looked at the main dealer invoices no mention of nikasil related probs although its only done 40k gen since new no smoke or nasty issues that are obvious thanks

well, Ok but it wouldn't be obvious, would it? And no, there wouldn't be any mention of it in the service history either...it's not something that causes a series of problems over time...one day you'll go to it and it won't start and that'll be that. Only way to check would be a leak down (or 'blow by', think they are the same thing) test. For me, personally, on a car that has done that low mileage I think I'd take the precaution and have one done, after checking the plaque on the engine to see if it is, indeed, a nikail engine or not in the car (you assume it would be).

Its not an issue. If its running well now, it wont degrade. Any damage would of been done 10 years ago, so if there are no signs, generally you;ll be fine.
When was it registered, mins is 24 Sept 1999 and has a steel lined engine, one of the first as it was an early MY2000.

Price is about right, i paid 11k two years ago with 50k on it

What if the damage was done 10 years ago, and it's done so little mileage since it just hasn't had time to develop more severe symptoms? Unlikely but it could happen. All depends on the recent mileage, but if it did 35k miles in the first few years of it's life and has been sitting around since it could be a problem. Meh, up to the OP.

thanks guys for the mixed views the car has been owned from new by the owner and a third car used only week ends ( heard before i know) have checked the miles over the years with services and mots has done around 3k each year for first seven then three years at around 5k and 3k over the recent years drives fine not sure if its steel lined poss not car has always been down south and believe the northern cars suffered due to the high sulpher in fuel still tempted as owner seems a genuine chap keep views coming many thanks will decide over the week end with luck

To answer your question and not to go scare mongering, 8.5K is not a bad price if the car is genuine....

All cars have issues, nikasil is old hat, there maybe chances of it causing a problem but very unlikely, 99 was the change over year..... tensioners are worth checking as has been said and the footwells, they will go on every XK if not kept in check

Sounds like a peach, let hope its not a lemon in disguise wink

Might be worth changing the gearbox fluid as well? Jaguar say it doesn't need doing but I struggle to believe that. On that note, your car will have a Mercedes gearbox, not the ZF unit.
