This is just part of my research into a possible purchase later this year. If either of these cars are still for sale when I'm ready to purchase then they will be on my list of vehicles to look at.
The purchase will be a second car to be used as a classic/weekend toy and the odd trip to the shops.
What are the pros and cons of each car?

They say the 4 litre is the better car...but thre V12 is a V12 and you'ved got to own one of those in your life, right??
have a look at both. Dont worry about the fuel cosdts of the V12. They will both like a drink, and you wont really notice the difference if its a second/third car. I know the figures say othereise, but the actual differeive will probably be less then £150 over a year. So buy the best

If I had to choose it would be between a 4.0 manual and a 6.0 V12 - both as late as possible - so neither of these. The twelve would cost a bit more on engine work and petrol - other costs pretty much the same. Huge potential money pits of course, but you knew that. Parts are at least plentiful amd reasonably priced (mostly, don't break the headlilghts), and plenty of decent indy garages can work on them.
About the cheapest way you'll ever get to drive a V12 and an epic engine for smoothness. On my 'one day' list - a XJ12 X305.

The Celebration is a 95.25MY car and the V12 is probably a 92.5MY car. I think that the 92.5 has inboard brakes, but my memory is a bit hazy on that one.
Personally of the two I would get the 4.0L - it is a later car, has 16" wheels, brakes are better (Teves 4 system), has the AJ16 engine (performance is quite good), doesn't have that awful leaper on the bonnet and by then pretty much every bug had been fixed on the car.
Faced with a choice of two similar age cars in similar condition, one with a V12, one with the 4.0L, for a car I was going to use at the weekend I would pick the V12. The V12 interior is slightly nicer - better wood, more leather use, not that many would notice that the door cards are genuine leather on a V12 and ambla on a 4.0L.
The OP really needs to go for a drive in a few of these cars to see the difference in character between them.
