Hi,

I've haven't been using my x308 much recently - has been left in the garage unmoved for up to four weeks at a time over the past 10 weeks - and since I started using it again it's developed a really loud squeaking noise from the rear offside wheel.

I initially thought it was the brake shoes inside the rear hubs for the handbrake, so I drove it slowly and gently applied the handbrake so as to give them a clean, but that didn't solve the problem.

I also thought that the discs might need de-glazing, but thinking about it the squeaking wasn't there before and I haven't had the wheels off so the possibility of getting any grease on the discs is virtually nil.

Has anyone come across this issue of squeaking a wheel/hub after leaving their car laid up for a while?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It may well be the UJs on the half shafts have dried out. Grease all four and see if the squeak stops.

Fixed the squeak - turns out that the 27mm centre nut holding on the hub needed between 90-180 degrees of a turn to tighten it. Haven't checked the torque setting on the nut but it's perfect now. When I find out what it should be torqued to I'll pop the inner alloy hub off the wheel and tighten the nut without having to remove the wheel. Will still jack the car up first to relieve any strees first though smile
Does anyone know the torque setting for the 27mm nut that holds the hub in place and should I add some loctite as well?

Well, the x300 is about 300 to 320 Nm. I'm pretty sure the x308 is the same set up. You might need a new bearing as these are not like the front ones that you can tighten up a little. The nut is 'use once only' and I don't think that means drive until bearings wear then tighten and drive again.

Thanks Straight6DOHC, I was kind of guessing that they'd need replacing after this, Thanks again!

I have an X100 XK8 so not sure how similar they are but I had a squeaky nearside rear hub and it was the bearing which was pretty dry but had also been fitted without a shim between the bearings as it should have been. Unfortunately, by the time I found out what it was (having tried greasing the UJs and then suspecting failed handbrake shoes) the bearing had damaged the hub so it needed a new one of those too - the moral is, get it checked quick!

Just an update to this post - I got the two rear hubs rebuilt last week. perfect job, sound as a bell.

But when I went to collect the car the first thing my wife said when she seen it was "look at the driver's door"....

A two inch ding around 5 inches below the door handle...

In fairness they didn't argue. Just said sorry and to come back on Saturday and their paintless dent remover guy will fix it.

So, I arrived Saturday morning and the dent guy couldn't get the dent out 100% as it was right over a part of the door where there is some sort of side impact rail in the way.. Which means he couldn't get his tools to the exact spot where the ding was.

So, I said it's not perfect. They said we will call you after the long weekend and sort something out with the boss.

I'm not sure what to do here. My x308 is old but it's really really spotless and I'm worried that, even if they manage to get the dent out, the paint on the door under the fixed dent will be cracked from the inside and will eventually become a rust spot.

Any advice or help on what to do in this case - or if anyone has had a similar experience - it would be greatly appreciated if you could let me know where I stand.

Best wishes

The garage have already admitted culpability by agreeing to get their dent guy have a go at repairing the damage. The fact he can't is their problem not yours.

You are entitled under law to have the car repaired to it's pre damage condition - no material loss is the phrase I believe - so I'd suggest you insist on a repair you are happy with, no matter what it takes. The garage will have insurance - they can make a claim on that policy.

You might also suggest a nice goodwill gesture would be to do the work the car originally went in for for free and a courtesy car is provided whilst the damage repairs are carried out.

Just an update to this for completeness.

The garage booked the car into their paint shop.

On the way over last Saturday I gave it a wash and stopped in an empty carpark, it was a lovely sunny day, to look at the remainder of the dent.

I struggled to find the mark tbh, it took me a few minutes to locate it. It's still there, but it's fine. So, when I went to the garage as scheduled I just said to them that the mark is still there but it's really difficult to see. So I asked that, instead of booking it in to get painted, if they agree that if a rust spot develops later - under the point where the dent was - would they correct it. They said yes and added that for the next job I need doing they would give me a discount as a gesture of goodwill.

I think that's ok. I didn't want to have the door painted as it really isn't necessary, plus if it does rust they will paint it anyway and since the door is galvanized on both sides the likelihood of that happening isn't that high.

So it's all ready for a nice spin in two weeks time for the hollybops smile
