After 68,000 miles, and having shown no signs of problems developing, the dreaded transfer box has just gone bang on my X Type 3.0l Sport Manual, apparently taking the prop shaft with it. Managed to source a new transfer box for £575. Anybody any idea how many hours of labour are likely to be required?

My transfer box went at 45,000 on 2.5 sport manual, only warning was a vibration on the front left wheel, took it to Jagutech Hull, they traced it back to the transfer box going, causing a vibration down the front left drive shaft to the wheel. It's 10 hours labour and you've all the oil and sealants to pay for, I was charged £1,400 in total but you could easily double that from a main dealer.
I've had 2 X type sports from new first one 2003 traded in at 60,000 miles not a problem from the transfer box the current one 2006 went at 45,000, now my driving style didn't change between the 2 cars as I had a like for like replacement, but I may be wrong that Jaguar withdrew the viscous coupling from the X type AWD setup in 2004 and that has made later cars more vunerable to transfer box failure, anybody know differently?

Swallows of Rooksbridge have done the work today. New Transfer box £575. Second hand prop shaft £100. Six hours labour £390. Could have been a lot worse I guess...

Mine went at around 68k. Just made it to Swallows the day it was due to be done. Was making a god awful noise and the vibrations had me down to 50-55mph on the last stretch of M5 with my fingers crossed!

Decent blokes and some great cars to poke around in the yard and the field smile
