How would I best cover myself? Original V5 lost, I will get a copy of original purchase invoice from private vendor to dealer, service history handbooks, keys and proof of ID of dealer.

Any thoughts??

Cheers

Original vendor pays for a new V5 from DVLA, he gives to dealer, you swap for money.

Unless you trust the dealer...

You walk, or run, somewhere else where everything feels right.

Can't see a problem, must happen quite often

If you are deeling through a dealer they can check all is OK regarding ownership
They will also inform the DVLA of the change of ownership. You will get the new V5 in the normal way with your name on it
There wouldn't be any additional charges, even if there was the dealer would be paying them

If you were buying from the hopefully owner I would then just insist we finalised everything at the local DVLA office

Me too... Not having a V5 to hand suggests either dishonesty or a lack of care or there's somthing to hide. Either way you don't want any involvement - especially with the motor trade.

Take it you have done a HPI Check to make sure it is not a CAT C and marked on the log book
