Jaguar XJR 1998 - Failed emissions!

A Jaguar that I can buy has failed its MOT on emmisions, it runs perfect except for slightly lower fuel consumption and the exhaust pipes are really sooty, there is no blue smoke and their is plenty of power, covered 77k with fsh.How are the levels brought down?? Any advice is most welcome, Thanks Danny

My friend has an XJ8 3.2 and he had exactly the same symptoms and it was a lambda sensor.
