Gearbox issues
Discussion
Hi,
I have a Jaguar XJ8 2003 X350 with 73K which has recently developed a couple of problems with the auto box. The car will not change into 5th or 6th unless I move the gear lever from "D" to "5" and then back to "D" again. Also when stone cold the car surges and the revs jump around slightly, this only happens until its hot.
The box is otherwise very smooth and it's almost silent on the changes.
I have had a re-flash of the software on the box but this did not cure it. I have been reading about an additive called "Dr Tranny" made by Lubegard, it's mainly for torque converter lock up shudder, however, I have read that the surge problem is related to that. Does anyone know if this additive is successful and if it is ok to add it into my car?
Does anyone have any advise that you can offer me please?
Thanks
P H

That's not particularly cheap. I bought all the parts and fluid from a Mercedes dealer (the gearbox is a Mercedes 722.6 automatic gearbox, well it is for a 1998 XJR, not sure if it's the same for yours). Total cost £95.68 +vat. I then paid a local mechanic £50 to change it.
The part numbers are as follows from the Mercedes dealer:
Filter 5021F £8.54
Sump gasket 5006E £7.18
Seal ring P606242 £0.79
Transmission fluid Shell ATF 3403 M115 Part no:JLM 20292 £10.52 per litre. you will need 7 litres.
You will also need a dipstick which you can buy from ebay for about £10.
Total £174.81

Morning,
Have a look here,
http://www.xk8-parts.com/index.php/category/xk8-an...
Scroll to the bottom of the page, the correct oil & sump is £148 & vat.
I bought this kit, and my local indie charged me an hours labour to do the job on my X350. It wasn't showing any faults, just my peace of mind around 70k
The service from XK8 parts was superb (no connection)
