Dare say have been covered many a time so excuse the repeat, Just purchased a lovely xk8 conv with some nice subtle bolt ons. It does have a front end rattle noticeable on start up until oil gets round, looking at the info im convinced its old generation tensioners, so im ready to invest in new 4th generation. Not over keen to go to a main dealer due to costs on labour, so ideally would love to find a ex jag or mob mech who can do the job. Would consider my local garage but they are not jag specialists, Im in chichester west sussex , any one recommend or advice. Advised water pump upgrade too. she has full jag history and just on the 100k well cared for very nice for a 97 have to say, Did jaguar ever contribute to these repairs as it seems it was a poor design issue, many thanks to all who can help,

Arun Jaguar are pretty near you, used to get good write ups in the Jaguar press. I've never used them myself though.

hi tr7 v8 thanks for that, I have contacted them and believe it or not they are a tad more expensive than my main dealer on my door step!! thanks for the reply. I may be trying to get a price that is not physically achievable, just hoped there may be some one out there who does these jobs. Seems any thing under £1200 is a good price!! all in. Will be getting the tensioners done what ever the case. Im still listening, and learning.

We are a bit further away as we are in Andover, Hampshire and are a XK8/R specialist. We charge £950+vat for the tensioner upgrade. We currently have one customer that comes to us from Chichester so I assume we are not that far.

Changing the secondary tensioners alone should take no more than 3 hours at the most - it's an easy enough job for a reasonably competent mechanic or DIY'er to do but you must have the correct timing tools which can be hired from the JEC

Water pump should be changed for the later design.

thanks to xkr and steve for the replies, ok up date.... and whos a LUCKY BOY!!! rattle was more evident on the right bank, so this was the first cover to remove and found top tensioner was metal to metal!!!! the plastic had come away and hadnt got caught in the chains how lucky was that, now looking at the other bank to see the state of play there. will up date as we go

My tensioners were done at Lodsworth Garage at Lickfold which isn't too far away. They are Jag specialists and prices seem reasonable.

JagCare, Portchester,

done mine 2 years ago along with head gaskets and waterpump on the V8. Look afer my 3 XJr's and always advise if things look to be getting out of hand. Simon or John are the contacts.
