Hi
I'm contemplating getting a used XK / XKR and am wondering if there is a model year / engine etc that should be avoided because of known issues ( coming from Porsche so now know all about engine issues that I didn't before purchasing ).

What extras are must haves in general ?

If anyone could point me in the direction of a buyers' guide or give me a few do and don'ts I'd be grateful.

Thanks.

The Jaguar engine in both 4.2 and 5.0 is pretty well sorted so nothing to worry about there. 5.0 cars have newer interior (no J gate) more power but aren't available until 10 plate (?)
Options, it's personal choice, but get an R wink

If you look back over my previous posts I have answered this many a time.

In a nutshell, buy a launch (Nov '56) if you can. These were highly specked. (Lux Sport leather interior is essential in my book) The 2008MY lost the ugly antenna, but if you are to go 4.2 V8 which the 2007 cars are, I would plump for a run out edition. Ideally the 4.2 XKR-S (none currently available from what I can see) or next best is the limited edition XKR as seen here. Has all the good handling bits off the R-S, coupled with lux interior, B&W sound system etc.

But if it was me, I would hang on until my budget could get me a 5.0 ltr XKR, these are by far superior to the 4.2, with their v nice interior and the extra power and more importantly the adaptive dynamics. ( It won't be long.)

As a week versed Jag customer, I would stick with the more expensive dealer network cars, be very fussy, get a mint low mileage car. It may take a bit of time, but be patient and you will be rewarded.

Good luck!

I have just seen a 06 and the tailgate paint has large paint blister patches above the chrome jaguar strip. I haven't seen XK's before with this problem, common on X350 XJ's and well documented, is this a sign that early aluminium XK's have the same problem with paint adhesion as the X350 XJ, thus launch year 2006 cars may not be such a good buy.

Probably more likely to be a poor repair job as I have never seen paint blisters on the tailgate before.

Yes XKs have the same problem, I've looked at few used XK/XKR (2006/07) and all three had corrosion in various places, door, tailgate, wing.

Be careful as Jaguar won't always cover it under the paint warranty. My XJ had corrosion on boot lid and boot scuttle which they sorted, but the huge corrosion of the rear arch they said was caused by a stone chip and refused to fix it (despite no surface break in the paint). They point blank refused to enter into any discussion. I did eventually get the selling dealer to fix it after reminding them of a few bit of the Sale of Goods Act.
