What does the "R" stand for?

If anyone asks i usually say "R for fast"
But i guess it would be better if i actually found out.
All i can think is R=race, but ive got a funny feeling its not.
Maybe its merely a letter.

I assume the road cars were named after the race cars.

Group 44 were responsible for the first few XJRs - starting with the XJR-1.

Agreed - I think its for "racing" too but I can't remember where I saw that confirmed officially
