having just had a test drive of a 2002 x type 2.5 v6 Im confused!!! the car roars like a angry tiger and seems to pull with more grunt all thru the gears (auto) she sounds like a v8 ?? having had a few jags this has thrown me like the feel of her and the sound is superb, but does any one have any ideas what may have been done to her as in the form of any subtle mods. Owner doesnt have a clue . The fuel consumption is averaging around 19mpg too. Or is this sound and drive normal when driving these hard ish lol. Any thoughts .Oh and its not just me my friend also commented as their x type doesnt make these sounds. ideas ? thanks

Did you have a look under the bonnet on this test drive?

It could have an aftermarket performance exhaust that the owner didn't know about I guess.

There is no centre resonator box on these so when you put woofly back boxes on they can get rather growly. The original boxes are simply huge.

I had custom built back boxes and then a resonator to tame the cabin boom. It sounded fab before the resonator was put in but I couldn't live with it as a daily.

Now I have a decent growly Jag which is still great for quiet cruising smile

had another viewing. all lookes pretty standard, the growl is not from the exhaust at rear, when driving seems to be from rear of the engine compartment . some one said the first cat is around that area? car goes like a bat out hell and is faultless from what we can see. Just this growl had got me to think as if it has had a mod and not sure what it is our insurance may be a bit picky should the worst ever happen, thanks all

Aha, blowing exhaust type stuff then smile

Quite possible as you have 3 cyls pointing forwards and 3 pointing backwards. Not the end of the world but a bargaining point wink

My 2006 model does sound very gruff before it is fully warmed up on a cold and frosty morning.

Because the engine is mounted transversely one cat is at the front and the other is at the rear. The rear one is an utter pig of a job to replace, so if you're buying the car allow several hundred quid for a replacement. And replace the lambda sensor while you're at it.
