Hi,

I wondered if someone might be able to offer some advice.

A friend has a 2003 (4.2l) XKR coupe.

A few months ago he could smell petrol, had the car inspected and the garage reported that the fuel tank had split. Not a fault that I have heard being common on these cars.

So. he had it replaced and very shortly after the same thing has occurred again, this time the garage has told him the split has been caused by the tank imploding and this was the likely cause the last time as well.

They seem at a loss as to how this has happened or how to prevent it next occurring again. it seems to me that if the engine is drawing petrol from the tank causing it to implode it must be as air is not getting in to the tank to replace the petrol - should be a fairly straight forward fix?

Any comments/help/advice/experience would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

locked breather system. I had this years ago on a Renault 18 estate. Asked for a locking petrol cap & they fitted a saloon one without a breather. The estate needed a vented cap & it then vacuumed its tank from 12 gallons to 5! Took ages to sort.
