x type estate or bmw touring?
Discussion
hi pistonheads.i am just about to start my search for a new car.i am currently driving a bmw 323 saloon but we have just found out we are having another baby so i need something a little more economical and with a bigger boot and folding rear seats.
now up until yesterday i was looking at bmw e46 touring.ideally i wanted a 330d but would settle for a 320d if i saw a nice one.....then comes my problem.i started looking at jags and found that for my budget (around 4k) you can get what seems to be a lot more car for your money.
so my questions to you lot are...are these x types up there with bmws with things like reliability, comfort, economy on fuel etc?
has anybody owned a 330d and an x type? they do look a really nice motor and there is a lot more choice but what spec should i be looking out for?what are the common problems etc?
thanks for your help mart77

I've had a 2005 X-type estate 2.2d Sport Premium for nearly 5 years & put 60,000 miles on it in that time. I love it. Its smart, stylish, has all the toys & gadjets. Has a massive boot for all my hobbies & family stuff & feels quick on the road.
In that time the only thing its needed are 2 rear control arms (short arm with a bush in each end on the rear suspension - about £100 per side to fit). All otrher costs have been routine servicing & tyres.
I get about 36mpg around town & upto 48mpg on a run. Not amazing economy but I drive fairly quick.
