Hi Guys,

Need a bit of advice. I have decided I am going to treat myself to one of the above for my 60th birthday having always lusted after one since they came out. I am looking at 2003/2004 cars for preferred looks and budget. Is it best to get one with the Jag satnav built in as I actually prefer the " 3 dial dash" not the square screen and if judging by Land Rover's efforts to keep the maps updated on Range Rovers the Jag ones will be well out of date by now and getting useless.

Opinions on a post card please !

The 3 dials became rarer the newer the MY, with satnav becoming the default fit. Back in the day the satnav fitted cars were more desirable & attracted a higher price. IMHO it won't make any difference now to price or desirability....

Apparently there aren't any updates for the satnav anymore, so it will become more and more obselete.

I think the 3 dial dash looks more in keeping too

But then I am a little biased:

I just use my phone's satnav (Google nav)

As I understand it the last version DVD for the satnav is around 2004/5.

I imagine it wasn't a cheap option at the time so would have been annoying to have bought one of the last of the cars new only to find the satnav was already out of date.

I've looked at replacing mine with the three dials. I have the dials and the wiring, just waiting to see if I can find some decent replacement wood.

Go for the three dials (which I have in my XK8). I had the SatNav in my XJR-100 and the latest you can get is way out of date now and unlikely to be updated although it always got me where I wanted to go. As prior poster said (I'm not a Gurgle fan) Gurgle Navigation does just as good a job (massive downloads though - get a data plan or pay though the nose) although the integration with the stereo is convenient. The three dials are vanity dials but do look good. You can replace them with 'real reading' dials through an owner-designed project if you care to - three dials never go out of date smile

Good choice. The Jag satnavs have an appalling user interface and are awful to use, I always used my Garmin stuck to the windscreen.

My satnav is now a very expensive clock in the dash since I replaced the standard stereo.

The 3 dials do look much more suited to the wood dash. I've had my XKR convertible since October last year and it's been an absolute joy to drive. Get one, you won't be disappointed.

I wouldn't bin the Satnav if I had it, but the satnav is a very old clunky system - you are much better with the three dials and a Garmin or TomTom unit.

Recaro seats are a nice option if you can find one with, and parking distance sensors are useful at the back. The upgraded Alpine stereo is also well worth having.

Personally I found the recaro's to be"not all that" they look good but offer little extra support and are slightly harder to get into (they are also marginally thicker).
I also found the uprated stereo to be a disappointment, especially in a convertible.

As for the sat nav, it's not the old maps which are the problem- it's the clunky, difficult way you have to input destinations zi find annoying, but does any one use an xkr as daily, high mileage vehicle where you regularly don't know where you're going? I rarely use it now but prefer it to the dials.
Personally I think the dials are suited to light interiors but not so much in the darker cars.
