Looks like I will have to sell my Saab 9-3 convertible as the boss is pregnant again and the Saab is just too impractical. I've always liked the x-type and 3.0 v6's seem incredible value for money at the moment. I take it they will like a drink? And are there any specific things to look out for? Besides the transfer box.....
Here's the thread I started in March when I bought my 3.0 manual;

I love my 3.0 - it loves petrol stations!!!
In all seriousness its a very good car although, due to not having any work/income at the moment, mine will be going soon - will be sorry see her go however its the one unaffordable luxury that i have at the moment & i cant justify keeping her.
Havent had any problems with mine since i bought her 18 months ago.
Sailed through the MOT, serving is cheap (i have a local indy who looks after mine & he loves working on the Jaguar badged Ford as he puts it). Tosser!!!!!
Goes well (rapidly!), stops well, handles superbly - even better after i swapped the 19" wheels for a new set of 17's, big boot, fold down rear seats, looks good for an older car.
They are very good cars imo.

I havent driven a 2.5 or a diesel although i know someone who has a 2.0 diesel. Says he doesnt like it as he feels that the engine is a touch lumpy.
However i cant comment as i havent driven it.
If you can afford it go for the 3.0 - apparently the manual version (if you can find one) is even better than the 3 litre auto.

3.0 manual here, love it, now had it 3 years (it's an 02-plate)
Realistic fuel economy in mine is low 20s in town, mid 30s on a run driven sensibly (sticking to speed limits). High 30s, touching 40s if driven very carefully (cruise at 60-65 for 200 miles!). It will drink when in low gears playing round twisties.
2.5 is not exactly much better on fuel and misses the extra oomph.
I read up a lot before choosing, not regretted it.

Cheers for the replies, seems like there are a lot more 2.5's out there? Do these differ massively? Performance and economy wise?
I've had two 2.5 Sport manuals from new in the last 10 years. I had the choice of buying the 3.0 and decided against it on the following grounds:-2.5 was £25k the 3.0 was over 30k, at the time the 3.0 was seen as the stepping stone into the S
Manual 2.5 140mph 3.0 146mph £5K for 6 miles per hour you'll never see on UK roads
2.5 7.9 0-60 3.0 6.9 0-60 if you go to Santa pod but in the real world 50-70 not much
mpg 3.0 runs 1 mpg less around town
insurance higher on 3.0.
The trim levels SE, Sport and Sovereign were the same, so you paid £5k more for 500cc, when in fact it is the same duratec v6 engine, bored out to 3.0 from 2.5 or you could have it under bored at 2.1 and front wheel drive only. Hence the majority of new owners like myself went for the 2.5 and now the 3.0 is rare and mostly sold in automatic. I have a manual 2.5 2006 and these are rare as soon as the diesels came out in 2003-4 with FWD the AWD models sales dropped to a trickle. The 2.5 and 3.0 were dropped in the UK after the 2007 mild makeover only the estate was available in 3.0, the saloon only sold overseas, the last years of the X were FWD diesels until the 59 plate last models.

My Sovereign has piped leather heated memory seats, JaguarVoice, sat nav (I bought a 2012 disc), Quickclear screen, 6cd changer, burr walnut dash and steering wheel and door inserts, power fold mirrors, cruise, etc. Basically a lot of goodies. The walnut has the whiff of old school gentleman's club, but who cares?

I bought a 3 litre X type sport a few months back. 62k miles, fsh, 2 grand. Doesn't have all the toys that my missus' Saab convertible has (e.g. heated seats) but it goes like absolute stink, nearly impreza quick. I'm getting about 26mpg on super unleaded, about 24mpg on normal. Fuel tank's quite small, so only about 300 miles range. My car had been sat for a while so I've had to replace a sticky front caliper and it does feel awful spongy when you push it a bit. I initially thought this was because I'd come from a polybushed Alfa spider, but the more I drive it, the more I think I need to replace the shocks and look at the sway bars at the rear. There's no noise, but perhaps just a bit of play when I'm pushing it out of a corner.
Bought mine as a workhorse to take mountain bike and skis - it does have folding rear seats and that boot is huge. 4 wd will help on the Scottish winter roads, especially when I put winter tyres on it.
Absolutely no point buying a 2.5. There's more of them, but the fuel economy is about the same and there's a significant decrease in ooomph.
Plenty of advice on jaguarforum.com. It's all about the rear end noise, transfer box leaks and noise and rear brake calipers when it comes to buying one.

Good work sir!
By phone do you mean all the buttons on the radio / climate panel or is there actually one in the arm rest? 'cos if it isn't there you don't have one. Can't just pop a SIM in.
We need pics now and other PHer type details like mileage, history and er, stuff!
Manual or auto?

Some useful links/info on my garage entry: http://www.pistonheads.com/members/showcar.asp?car...
Will get some pics up once I've cleaned it:-) looks like just a keypad on the dash?? Colour is BRG which looks blue in some light, 90,000 miles and most importantly a manual!! Averaged 34mpg on drive back from Bristol and performed faultlessly when stuck in a jam on the lovely M25 for 45 mins. All in all very happy at the mo.
