Engine number is when it came off the engine production line, so your reads

1996
April
the 2nd
at 13:21

so whats strange

I know you say your car is a 1998 but the replacenent engines were returned engines rebuilt with steel liners

The new number is a butchered version of the Unipart engine number.

Be grateful that you have the rebuilt unit.
