Good man ! Not sure about being a winter runabout though - they're absolute pants in the snow.
That is putting it mildly. I'd recommend you buy some winter tyres. The standard P6000 as much use as chocolate tea pot in the snow. First time I tried mine I got stuck on a slight hill, it wouldn't quite go up on tick over and it just spun the wheels on any amount of throttle. It was funny, I could easily push it up the hill with the engine just on tick over and the car in gear :-)
Other than that, the X300 is quite clearly the best saloon car the world has or will ever know, just don't believe Steve when he comes along and says that the V8 is better, everyone knows you only put just 4 cylinders in row when you're being too cheap to arrange them in sets of six.

Which just raises the question what if someone decided to put a 6 litre V12 and a manual box into an X308.At least there might be hope in that case when all the series 3's finally give up through the ravages of time.Although the requirement of cataylytic converters in that case might just mean that it'll be worth trying to make the old series 3 last a bit longer.Edited by XJ Flyer on Monday 7th October 16:56

I've no idea how much work it would be to swap out the auto box for a manual in the V12 X300, people have done it with the XJS, but you've got most of the job done already.
I can't see there ever being a point where there won't be any Series III, at least not while there are still cars.

I was just thinking along the lines that the X308 is the later type and still looks great like the series 3 and X300 and it's based on the X300.The X300 is obviously just as easily capable of accepting a manual box as a series 3 or an XJ40 bearing in mind the supercharged 4 litre X300 which had a manual option.I've no idea how much work it would be to swap out the auto box for a manual in the V12 X300, people have done it with the XJS, but you've got most of the job done already.

I know someone who's put the cosmetic parts of a X308 onto their X300 as they preferred the look of the newer lights...etc (poor deluded fool, but each to their own)

IF you're throwing the whole X308 engine and transmission away to be replaced with the old V12 running with an afteremarket management system,or possibly even the standard V12 X300 system, and a manual box the electronics won't matter. That would only be a problem if you're trying to match the manual box with the V8.Which,if I heard it right,I think was just a case of trying to fool the engine management system into thinking that the auto box, which it also controlled, was still there ?.IE basically I don't think that there's any less reason as to why the X308 couldn't be run with a V12 with a manual conversion in just the same way as a series 3,XJ40,or X300 can.The only difference being that a V12 manual X308 would be a very rare beast when it's done.
You could well be right, car electronics isn't my area, but I seem to remember some of the people who've posted here about fitting manual gearboxes to the XK8 saying that the standard engine management system also runs all the dashboard and other stuff in the car. When they were doing it for race car that wasn't a problem because they didn't need any of the normal stuff.Edited by XJ Flyer on Tuesday 8th October 15:14
Bit more of a problem to NormanD who wants a manual road car.
Electronics in an X300 have just about got beyond the valve and cat's whisker stage :-)
