Am I missing a trick looking at XJR when there's an S type with the same engine for seemingly better value?

What XJR are you looking at? the X308 had a 4.0 SC, the X350 had a 4.2 SC. The S-Type only ever had the 4.2 SC.

Whatever floats your boat then. The 350 should be nimbler given the lower weight. I found the S-type a tad compact, and I'm 6' 2".

I think I made a pig's ear of explaining myself smile

I'm looking to buy an XJR with the 4.2sc engine, but I see that same engine is in the S type too. Was wondering if I should consider an S type as well, if they're better/worse/how are they different other than (worse) looks IMHO. Are they both aluminium for example?

Many thanks for your patience...

No ali on the S-Type.

It's all down to the style you prefere really.

I love my STR because of its looks, it was the retro looks that I wanted!

It feels very small when you drive it.

Mine has 19" 30 profile tyres, which makes it a bit harsher.
But then it handles better and it does handle well for a big un.
My other car is a Boxster, so a good comparison.

You'll be pleased to know the STR is a lot faster than the Boxter!

Ive only driven my STR, but the reviews claimed the STR is better handling than the XJR.

S-Type is nice but it is smaller and it is heavier. It probably handles better than an XJ on air suspension and traction control, but the XJ is good.

The XJ has a magic carpet effect and a size which somehow inspires confidence. It is a lot more effortless, in a good way.

I've owned both but a few years apart so I can't give a fair comparison.

I only sold my XJR a couple of months ago and I really enjoyed it.I think it felt more refined than the S type but the passing of time may be playing tricks. Somehow the classic, almost sedate looks, combined with ferocious performance is very special.

At the time I owned my S type R it was certainly one of the best cars I'd owned and I absolutely loved it.

They are both "stand out" cars in my car owning history.

I don't think you would be disappointed with either so I would just go for the one that you prefer to look of.

Another red one here, very little not to like about an STR.....as others say providing you like the styling.

The XJR is slightly faster (0.3 seconds) to 60 than the S type, no doubt due to being lighter?

The 4.0 XJR is identical in performance to the S type R if such things matter.

S type seems better equiped tho

I like both smile
