Coming next week now. However, is there any Jag specialist or tame main dealer around the Weybridge area?

I'm going to attempt to get the service records from the supplying dealer who's also serviced it from new, but knowing the calibre of the service guy I spoke to at one place, I suspect I'll be denied so I won't know when water/brake fluid/gearbox oil etc was done. I need to get that lot out of the way immediately.

Don't mind waiting for the next 10k service for the engine oil, but is gearbox oil something I can do myself as a competent mechanic? When is it recommended to be changed and also what oil is required for in there please?

It might be easier to answer if you'd given more information.
You new Portfolio what?
Jaguar have been using "sealed for life" gearboxes for some of their cars since the the introduction of the supercharged V8 in about 1996.
I think there had been comments that even the normal engine oil on the new 5L V8 isn't easy to change as there's no drain plug.

What's the mileage?

Most of these sealed gearboxes are OK for at least 100k miles.

To try and answer your question more directly, the gearbox fluid is changeable but needs the gearbox bottom cover and filter removed/replaced. Not sure how you top it up again. Without ramps I'd just find a garage to do it.

The kicker is the fluid, it's not cheap, something ridiculous like £20 a litre.

Budget on about £300 just to get the gearbox fluid changed.

But worth it though, my first xjr, an older 1998 model mind, self destructed the gearbox at 110K miles.

My second one had a hesitant shift from 1st to 2nd for the 30K odd miles I had the car, a fluid change made no difference, sold it with 126K miles.

And my last one (a 2007) had no gearbox troubles, sold it on with about 80k miles on it. I think I had the fluid changed at about 70K to be safe.

It might be worth searching on various Jaguar forums; this thread is interesting, even if not exactly the same box as yours (XJR 6 speed?). I seem to recall reading that the gearbox oil needs to be at a specific temp. to do it properly (although might be confusing that with Merc).
